CHARLOTTE, N.C.
According to a source, the Carolina Panthers will be placing tight end Hayden Hurst on injured reserve.
An anonymous individual revealed to The Associated Press on Friday that the announcement of the move has not yet been made.
The Athletic was the first to break the news.
The announcement was made shortly after the father of the experienced tight end, Jerry Hurst, shared on social media that his son had been diagnosed with post-traumatic amnesia due to a concussion suffered on November 9th during a game against the Chicago Bears.
Following his father’s worrisome message, Hurst went onto X, previously known as Twitter, and stated that he had experienced a “severe concussion” and had no recollection of up to four hours following the game.
Hurst referred to it as a frightening circumstance, but also mentioned that “Although it was frightening, it is NOT something that will end my career. I am beginning my journey back to playing this week, so hopefully everything goes well and I can make it back for the final few weeks!”
Hurst has been following the concussion protocol and has not been able to play. He has been participating in limited practice sessions.
Last offseason, the Panthers signed Hurst to a contract worth $21.7 million for three years. However, he has not lived up to expectations, recording only 18 catches for 184 yards and one touchdown in nine games.
The Panthers, with a record of 1-12, have been eliminated from playoff contention. This Sunday, Carolina will play host to Atlanta, whose record stands at 6-7.
