The Carolina Panthers struggled offensively and quarterback Bryce Young had a tough game in their 28-6 loss to the New Orleans Saints, according to the Panthers Playbook on WRALSportsFan.com.
All right, Chris, which is Uglier Saints uniform for Panthers offense. Go. That is the correct answer. That is the correct answer. Congratulations. You’ve scored more points than the Panthers did today. There. It is 28 6, 28 6. All right, let’s get the sucker started. The state of North Carolina covers 53,000 square miles. It is the habitat of the fear. Get dialed in Panthers fans for an in depth. Look at your team exclusive interviews, lock a room insight. Let’s huddle up for Panthers Playbook. Here are your hosts, Dennis Cox and Chris Lee. Welcome back to another episode of Panthers Playbook. That’s Chris Lee. Dennis Cox here with you. Uh, talking about another just gross Panthers game today, 28 6 loss at New Orleans before we get into the game. Make sure you smash the subscribe button and leave your thoughts and comments on this game and let us know if you’re starting to feel a little bit of apathy because I’m sure a lot of Panthers fans are maybe feeling that a little bit right now because I think Chris Panthers fans moved past anger and frustration to the point of like, you know, what, whatever, whatever at this point, I’m gonna be real, man. Um, if it weren’t my job for the television station or for this podcast to, to watch this game, like old Chris, I would have been done a couple of weeks ago. I don’t blame you literally. Like I, I’ll check my phone for the scores, go back to my piece and, you know, watch something else and, uh, we’ll pick it back up in the off season. You know, Chris, I got a Christmas tree and I was gonna put it right here behind me and set it up, but I didn’t want to disrespect my Christmas tree like that when we were discussing something this ugly because my tree is beautiful. It’s a good thing. You can’t see mine. Good thing. You can’t see mine in my setup anyway. Ok. So final score of this 1, 28 to 6. And there’s nothing about this team right now about this franchise that gives you any sort of like a glimmer of hope for the future. Nothing right now. Here, here’s the thing that we’ve seen. Here’s the thing I think is kind of interesting though with all of that. Um, if you just like, if you didn’t watch the game and if you just went back and you’re just kind of like, oh, the Panthers lost 28 6, let me just go to, uh, watch, you know, some of the, some of the stats and see what happened. Like, oh, wait, the Panthers had more first downs. Oh, ok. Uh, the Panthers had more total yards but almost 100. 0, ok. Panthers, uh, had a better time of possession. Oh, ok. Uh, passing, uh, only 11 yards difference. Uh, in the Saints favor Panthers outrushed them by over 100. Wait, what is going on here? Panthers only had four penalties and then you look at the turnovers and then you also look at the fact that when you actually watch the game, um, you can even be right there at the goal line or you can have fourth and one and you are having your best day on the ground that you’ve had this entire season and yet, um, the play calling is horrible. The blocking is horrible and the Panthers always seem to go backwards on that. And so it’s just, um, I’m looking at Twitter and you see people like, you know, Bryce, Bryce, Bryce again, what do we say on, on this past Thursday? Seriously? You watched II, I just don’t know how you watch this game and say, man, Bryce, I will say this II, I will say this. That was probably Bryce’s worst game in all honesty because there’s a lot I, yeah, I think it was one of his worst ones. Uh, and he’s had some bad ones. I think it’s one of his worst games because there are multiple times, especially on deep, like deep corner routes that he under threw under, threw a couple of times to thin under, threw one to shark as well. And then there’s pass that went into the end zone that he threw behind Sullivan. So he was a little bit behind on some of his throws. See, I knew he one that was behind Domingo as well. So the, the deep corner routes I know especially were under thrown multiple times today. And that was a little bit concerning, uh to me on those, uh on those passes specifically, I was like, hm, like that, like I’m trying to think it was like one that was like 1/4 down, uh like late in the first half, they decided to go for it, which I was like, heck yeah, go for, it’s fourth down. Who, who cares about the season? You should go for 1/4 down and they threw the deep out route or the deep corner route to uh DJ. Shark and he under threw it and like that needs to get out to the sideline. Like shark had to step on his guy. Like that needs to be out to the sideline under, threw it th caught one where he had to like slide and like because it was kind of like low and behind him, like those passes have got to be out a little bit further. So that’s something that did concern me a little bit about Bryce today is that the accuracy and stuff wasn’t there. But, I mean, overall, I mean, this team stinks like that’s what that, what those balls on different games were. Bryce’s worst performances. Um, I, I guess I’m watching a different game because I saw a guy who again was running for his life who also used his legs, probably had his best, uh, running performance, had 40 yards to keep the chains moving on several occasions. Um, and then, um, when you have an offense that has been 10 yards, come back for the entire season and then all of a sudden, Frank Reich is going and now you want to go deep, uh, for somebody who hasn’t been used to going deep and also somebody who’s also continues that pressure can never get his feet set. Um, yeah, the balls are gonna look different and also, like, I think any NFL game that you watch, there’s gonna be some, uh, guys who are gonna go deep and they’re not gonna connect. I mean, that’s why going deep is a risk in, in general. So I didn’t see any other to me. I didn’t see anything from Bryce that I wouldn’t have seen from another winning quarterback or any other winning franchise. Like I just, I still, I, I guess I’m kind of confused on like how any of this still comes back because if he really was that bad, then, you know, the backup will be in here, Andy Dalton would be playing and I, I just iii, I don’t see it. I really don’t see it. Now, are there rookie mistakes? Are there, are there throws that he probably wish he would have had back? Yes. That’s every quarterback, what quarterback is, is perfect. And I think we’re at this point now where things are so bad where now everybody just naturally wants to just pilot on everybody when like legit, like everybody is not the problem. E everybody’s not the problem. So I’m just, I guess I’m just not sure. Maybe I’m watching a different game, but I’m still seeing a guy who’s under duress who has no receivers who can get open and who made the same throws that any other quarterback on the run or under pressure would have made. But I mean, that’s just me, it’s even the ones who will, he’s not under pressure. It’s like there’s some balls that were thrown behind, some balls were thrown short and I was just kind of like it just, he didn’t feel like he was as accurate today. Now he’s under pressure. Sometimes he’s under pressure and he puts the ball in the right spot and it’s dropped or the, the defensive back makes a great play. I get that, but today it just seemed like he was a little bit more off than normal. Did you see the Tommy Tremble, um, uh, play where I guess, you know, first off bad play call. So that’s, that’s one thing so start with referring to uh where Tommy Trimble, I guess they were going forward on. I think it was the fourth and one. and Tommy Trimble is the, is the receiver that he’s going to Tommy Trimble uh slows up and then realizes, oh snap, he’s throwing me the ball and he has to hurry up. And so then on Twitter, you go to Twitter immediately and like, oh he overthrew Tommy Trimble and at what point, at what point do we forget about what the receiver’s responsibility is in, in getting these, uh, getting these catches? You know what I’m saying? And so like, you, you don’t have chemistry with this guy with these guys all season long and then you go back and you look at this type of stuff where one is a bad play call, you rushing the ball pretty well. Let’s just keep it on the ground. But then secondly, your guy is slowing up or are you hitting guys? What about the times where he’s hitting guys like legit in the hands and they’re, they’re dropping it? Like I, I just, you know, talking about that, we’re talking about the, the same throws that, that, you know, in, in just a little bit. I mean, as we’re recording, uh, we’re gonna have, uh, Patrick Mahomes, uh, you know, play, he’s gonna miss some guys and that’s Patrick Mahomes. He has two, Super Bowls and he’s considered the best that’s out right now there’s just some that are just like that and, and to me, I didn’t see this horrible game from this guy and like, uh, what could he have done? Like, to me if Bryce Young wasn’t in that game, this looks a lot worse. Like, let’s not forget who we had playing for us last year and with the same team, the same wide receivers, this will probably look a lot worse than what we had last year. That’s just me though. I don’t know, I guess I’m watching a different game than everybody on Twitter. Well, here’s the thing, here’s the thing. I Bryce can have a bad game but everyone else can still have a bad game too. Like that’s the thing like, so I think we’re getting games, they’ve had 13 bad games. Well, everyone’s had a bad game this season. Uh, this whole team has because they, they sucked this entire year. And my point is saying that I think it was one of Bryce’s worst games is that he did not look throwing the ball as good as we have seen him in some other games. I think las looked great in others, but yet Tommy Trimble did not look good. TJ. Shark couldn’t fight to make a completion or like, you know, fight against the defender to make a completion on contested catch. You have Raheem Blackshear slipping and falling on 1/4 down like things like that. I got to get up out there. R IP. But, you know, here’s the thing is that all those things that you talked about, the guys around them can be true. And Bryce Young also playing back can also be true. They’re not mutually exclusive. I think the problem is we think that it’s one or the other and it’s not, here’s my thing though. Um, at what point, like, do we look at it that these guys haven’t been playing well all season? He’s thrown some passes that probably should have been caught by other people that ended up being interceptions or drops. He doesn’t know what, what his protection is gonna do from one play to the to another. And this is a guy who’s unsure of who he’s throwing to. So, like, at what point do we realize that like as a rookie, I’m not sure if I could trust that this guy is gonna be at the right place at the right time. So I’m, I’m also kind of guessing as to where I think he’s going to be because also let’s part of not getting, uh, separation is the fact that there are slow receivers. So is he under throwing it because he’s like, oh, I overthrew it before because they’re slow. Let me try to figure out where they’re gonna be like that. That’s all I’m saying. Yeah. Is Bryce is playing a, a guessing game with these guys like he, he doesn’t know what’s, what he’s gonna get from one play to the next, he can hit Adam Thin for a great game for, for one play. And then the next play, Adam Thin slow getting out of his break and then it’s, uh, a game, a ball that should have been caught. It’s just gonna fall in front of his feet because he was too slow getting to the ball. So he doesn’t know that there’s no consistency with that. So at what point do we give Bryce Grace for that part of the game? That’s all I’m saying. Like I, I want to see him with a, with a scheme with a line and, and receivers and then if he still sucks with that. Ok, Bryce, you’re not cutting it, bro. We gotta go to Andy Dog. That’s all I’m saying on all of that. That’s a long term projection. We talked about that on Thursday last week, which by the way, if you missed that, go check it out here on youtube or wherever you find your podcast. We just talked a lot about it this week, but I’m just talking about this game specifically and I’m referring to this game specifically, like, you don’t know what you’re gonna get from one place to the next. Like, do you trust these receivers? I don’t trust anybody on this team. I don’t trust anybody. I don’t trust anybody on this team. No one. So I don’t trust that. What do you, what do you think the mental gymnastics in his head is like the, the play callings changed three times. My head coach is done. This line can’t, you know, can’t protect me. The, the, the play calling is bad. The scheme sucks in general and I, I don’t know if the same throw that I made last week, uh, that’s gonna get a 20 yard game. I can make it the same, uh, throw this week because I just, I’m not sure if they will be there and it has literally nothing to do with the defense. It has everything to do with the route running and the receivers. I think that’s the part and maybe we need to get another quarterback. We, we’ll be talking to Boomer Andy this week. So maybe that’s the question I can ask him but like, or get another quarterback on another, another time. But that’s one of those things I’ve been thinking about like, when you don’t trust that somebody’s gonna be there, how does that impact your ball placement? Yeah, because we didn’t see this in Alabama and, and that’s like, it’s different. It, it would be a difference if this is a part of like who he was and we saw a little bit of this at Alabama, whatever. We didn’t see any of this and now everything sucks and now we’re seeing some of this. That’s why I’m like, I don’t know if it’s him yet. I’m not, now I’m not opposed to, to to, you know, ragging on a man because again, we said this, we both wanted CJ Stroud for the Panthers, but I’m not even sure. Again, in this situation CJ would have been better, which I hope he’s better. It looks like he’s gonna go to concussion protocol because he had an injury himself. So I just, I don’t know. That’s, that’s something maybe I can ask Boomer this week when he comes on, you know, here’s the thing. I would try to tell Bryce, I hate Bryce. You make the right throw, you make the right play and if they don’t get there, that’s on them. But you put it on tape, that you made the right play and that, that’s the thing like you make the right call and if they don’t get there, then you can sit there on the sideline and say, get to that spot. I’m putting it where you’re supposed to be. That’s my thing. Or like, you know what? If you got to just eat the football because you get sacked or if you’re getting pressure, you got to throw it away. You can go to the sidelines and say, hey, guys, I’d throw that one away because of this. Let me ask you this when, when people say, like you gotta throw somebody open and like, if your guys just aren’t open or, you know, I, I, if maybe the best play is to under throw it a little bit so your guys can either come back to it or maybe, uh you know, the DB is gonna, you know, get called for pass interference and you’re just gonna march up the field anyway. Like, like is, do you think that that’s not something that’s kind of going on in his head during those times? Like, maybe the right play is to put it over his right shoulder. But I know that uh he, that’s not gonna give him the best opportunity because of this guy and what he showed me. So maybe I’ll un under throw it a little bit, see if he can come back to it because that’s the best play. Like, is that not a possibility? I mean, probably he’s going through his head, but I was just say, look, just make the right throw, just make the right play. If that guy can’t get there, then guess what? It’s on tape for him. You know what? You suck, which we all know you can point in just about every stats in general though. Yeah. Well, you know what stats be? Damn, make the right choice. The stats be damn, make the right choice. That’s really, it just make the right choice. But overall like this, it’s just this team’s just bad man. Like six points against the Saints six. That’s it, six leading in most offensive statistical categories. Here’s the thing like it doesn’t matter like it doesn’t matter what your yards and all that stuff are if you can’t freaking score, like who cares? Like you could, you can go between the twenties and stuff while you want to. But whatever. And I will say this though, sometimes those numbers and stats can be a little bit misleading. The fact that I mean, the Saints were starting at like midfield most like at least early in the first half, they’re starting like in midfield. It’s like, well, of course, you’re gonna have more yards than the Saints when they only had to go like 50 yards or something like that to set up their, then you block a punt and then the Panthers offense gets it right back. No, I get it. But a lot of those times like, you know, if you, if you look at somebody who had the, the ball 1010 more minutes than the other team and they had 100 more rushing yards in general in the game of football, you would think that 60% of the time you’re gonna get the win and it just, and I, I think, you know what we’re both saying is, um, even with that, even when you have the advantage somewhere, there is a disadvantage because as you said, this team just, it stinks like it’s, um, and Frank Reich wasn’t the complete problem. Um I hope David Tepper does the right thing and gets rid of the general manager who’s in, who’s in charge of putting the players on the field uh, because the, the players on the field just aren’t good, they don’t stack up enough. Um, and that is gonna be a problem for the Panthers and whoever the new head coach is going to be. Um, you know, I, I even think that, like, hey, you might want to think about keeping his zero ever rolling. He’s doing his job. We haven’t talked about the defense much. I mean, there’s a few things that you wish you had back for the defense, but at the end of the day, like, you know, 14 points scored off of turn turnovers and they allowed another 14 themselves. Like, what can you say? That’s, that’s in, in today’s NFL, it’s a pretty good game. Yeah, pretty good game from the defense. Yeah, overall, I mean, this is the healthiest defense has been all season. I mean, because, I mean, since week one is the first time that all four starting defensive backs were there. I mean, I know Shaq Thompson is still not there, but chin was back, obviously. Lou and all that there. But I mean, that’s the healthiest. The team has been all season, you know, on defense and they still played. All right, Shaq and Deshaun Williams are really the only ones right now who are, you know, did, did, did Sean Williams actually play? So he didn’t play today because, you know, but, but yes, but I mean, I know he suited up but did he actually play uh in some of those other games. It’s just, it’s just, it’s, this whole season’s really been a waste. This whole season really has been a waste. And I, I will say this and we, we can wrap up on this was that we talked about before the season. You and I talked about this even back in a, in April after the draft. Is that the, the success of this season is all about the development of Bryce. That’s it. The success of the season is all about the development of Bryce Young. And I will say they haven’t done nowhere close to a good job of developing him, nowhere near close. That’s it. The success of the season was about the development of him. And that’s why I think this season not because they’re one in 12, but because of the fact that they have not done anything to help Bryce really as a whole from protection to guys around him to offensive play call and the whole deal, nothing has helped Bryce not saying Bryce is, you know, without fault. We talked, we talked about that earlier in this episode, but if this team has done nothing to help develop him this season is a failure. And, and the fact that we’re saying that you use the right word failure with that. But the fact that we’re saying that with the all-star cat or, or coaching all-star coaching staff, staff that was assembled, like, you know, especially having Josh mccown and Frank Reich and, and uh Jim Caldwell there and everything like that. Like, come on, man, like for, for the fact that it’s, it’s, it is this way we’re saying this right now with what was in the building at one point and who still is in the building right now? II, I will, I will say one more thing here is that usually when like a coach gets fired or like a quarterback gets benched or something like that, usually you get the, the, the rally, you know, the team like to rally around, you know, like, hey, we’re gonna rally around first tabor, you know, let’s, let’s let’s rally. Frank Frank got fired. Let’s rally together guys. Never once saw that with this group. Not once there’s nothing but like from last game or this game, nothing like, hey, let’s rally together guys. You never saw any of that. Just I think a part of that too and this goes back, that’s player leadership. Let’s play. Well, I was gonna say this kind of goes back to Scott Federer because some of those guys that you had that probably would have rallied around and you could have had there uh to back up folks like Brian Burns or whatever. Uh So it wouldn’t be all be on Brian Burns. They’re just not there right now. They’re not in that locker room and it sucks. And, and another part that sucks is Jack Thompson. Is injured, so he’s probably not there every day himself. So it’s, it, it becomes a, a complete 108 I’m sorry, 360 degree failure. Um In that organization, it’s all around, all around. Make sure you smash the subscribe button. Like Chris said earlier. We’re talking to Boomer Saison again earlier uh later on this week. So we’ll have that for Thursday’s episode. We’re gonna talk to Boomer. I know there’s a lot, there’s a lot that has changed since now and then. But leave us your thoughts in the comments section below. Thanks again to everyone who, who watches, who subscribes, who comments everything uh massive. Thank you all. Uh Thanks for, for riding with us, even through the thick and the thin uh and whatever we wanna call this, uh the, the, the, the slog, the slush, the crap, whatever you want, whatever you wanna say, whatever it is, it’s bad times. Exactly. It’s, it’s that do we need dusty roads to cut us a hard times promo on Scott Federer right now. We might give it to David Tepper. Actually. I’m sorry. Yeah, Tepper. Yeah. Give it to Tepper. Six straight losing seasons under David Tepper. There’s the stat for you. That stat doesn’t lie.
