The Carolina Panthers have chosen their new general manager. Instead of hiring from outside, they are promoting assistant general manager Dan Morgan to the position of president of football operations and general manager. This decision was made public on Monday evening.

Dan Morgan’s Resume

Morgan began his NFL front office journey as an intern with the Seattle Seahawks in 2010, eventually becoming the assistant director of pro personnel in his second year. He held this role until 2014, during which time the Seahawks won Super Bowl XLVIII with a score of 43-8 against the Denver Broncos. In 2015, Morgan was elevated to director of pro personnel and oversaw the pro and advance scouting efforts for the Panthers, as stated on the team’s website.

Between 2018 and 2020, Morgan transitioned to the AFC where they served as the director of player personnel for the Buffalo Bills. During this time, the team successfully made it to the playoffs twice and even reached the AFC Championship game in 2020.

In 2021, Morgan became the assistant general manager for the Charlotte front office.

Panthers owner David Tepper stated that Dan possesses extensive understanding of our football team and a definite direction to lead us towards our desired destination. Tepper expressed confidence that Dan will approach this opportunity with the same fervor and dedication he displayed as a Panthers player.

Dan Morgan is more recognized as a Carolina Panthers player rather than a front office member. He was selected as the 11th overall pick by the Panthers in the 2001 NFL Draft after playing for the University of Miami (Fla.). During his time in college, he received the Nagurski Trophy, the Butkus Award, and the Bednarik Award, as well as being named an All-American and being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame class of 2021.

From 2001 to 2007, Morgan was a part of the Carolina team for seven years. In 2004, he earned a spot in the Pro Bowl for his 102 tackles. During the Super Bowl XXXVIII that same year, Morgan made 25 tackles, setting a record for the most tackles in a Super Bowl game and for the franchise’s postseason.

Earlier this year, the Panthers dismissed their former general manager, Scott Fitterer. Despite having the worst record in the NFL with 2-15, the team will not have its first round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft due to a trade made last offseason for the No. 1 pick.
