The 4A wrestling championship was won by Davie County after intense matches against Laney.
In the end, Davie County emerged victorious in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A dual-team wrestling state championship at the Greensboro Coliseum Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon after two intense matches.
Davie County’s Christian Boswell from the War Eagles team achieved a 10-8 victory over Laney’s Kaeden Smith in sudden death. This win clinched the 190-pound weight class and ultimately led to Davie County’s 31-25 triumph and 4A state championship.
Before the 190-pound match, Davie County was ahead of Laney 28-22 with only two matches remaining. The War Eagles had a six-point lead, largely due to Hunter Testa’s victory by pinning Holden Walker in the 175-pound weight division at the 2:35 mark. Testa was awarded the title of MVP for the state championship.
On Saturday, the War Eagles had two recorded falls, one by Testa and the other by Tiaj Thao in the 126-pound weight class.
In the first seven matches, Davie County was ahead of Laney with a score of 22-6. However, Laney’s Isaiah Wysong won by pin against Brett Foster in the 144-pound match, giving the Buccaneers a boost. Laney then caught up and tied the score at 22-22 in the next three weight classes before Davie County took the lead for good with Testa’s pin.
Davie County competed in the NCHSAA dual-team wrestling state championships on Saturday, making it their ninth appearance. They have been crowned three dual-team state champions, with their most recent victory occurring in 2006.
Laney has made it to the dual-team championship for the third consecutive season. Last year, they were the second-place team against Northwest Guilford. However, in this year’s 2022 dual-team championship, Laney defeated Northwest Guilford. Overall, Laney has participated in five dual-team championships and has a record of 1 win and 4 losses.

In the 285 weight class, Ryder Strickland from Davie defeated Michael Williams from Laney with a score of 3-2. This win contributed to Davie County’s overall score of 3-0.
In the 106 weight class, Ayden Arrington from Laney High School defeated Stephen Jacobs from Davie High School by a fall at 3 minutes and 52 seconds, resulting in a final score of 6-3 in favor of Laney.
Leighton Reavis (Davie) defeated Jack Williams (Laney) with a 14-7 decision, after being tied at 6-6.
Aidan Szewczyk (Davie) defeated Kingston Neal (Laney) with a score of 8-2, resulting in a 9-6 win for Davie County.
Tiaj Thao (Davie) defeated Samuel McQueen (Laney) by fall in 1 minute and 48 seconds, resulting in a final score of 15-6 in favor of Davie County.
In the 132 weight class, Cayden Glass from Davie defeated Eli Thomas from Laney with a score of 11-4. This win contributed to Davie County’s overall record of 18-6.
138: Andrew Davis (Davie) defeats Tyler Buonocore (Laney) by major decision, 13-5. (Davie County with a record of 22-6)
In the match between Laney’s Isaiah Wysong and Davie’s Brett Foster, Wysong won by fall at 4:29. This gave Davie County a score of 22 points to Laney’s 12.
In a 150-pound match, Tristan Cotto of Laney defeated Elliot Gould of Davie with a major decision of 12-4. This victory helped Davie County improve to a record of 22-16.
Marquise Kelly from Laney defeated Jerred Alexander from Davie with a score of 10-4. The overall score for the match was 22-19, with Davie County taking the win.
In the 165 weight class, Mac Kopelman from Laney defeated Maddox Creason from Davie by a score of 8-2, resulting in a tie score of 22-22.
In the 175 weight class, Hunter Testa from Davie defeated Holden Walker from Laney with a fall at 2 minutes and 35 seconds. This win contributed to Davie County’s overall score of 28-22.
In the 190-pound weight class, Christian Boswell from Davie County defeated Kaeden Smith from Laney in a sudden victory round, with a final score of 10-8. This win helped Davie County improve their overall record to 31-22.
