Terry Sanford sweeps 3A girls tennis singles, doubles state titles
It appears 3A girls tennis in North Carolina runs through Fayetteville.
Terry Sanford swept the singles and doubles state championships at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A state championships at the Burlington Tennis Center on Saturday.
Pauline Bui won the singles championship, while the duo of Loren Galaviz and Jenny Wang claimed the doubles title.
Bui defeated Carrboro’s Ryan Hanes 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the singles championship on Saturday. Earlier in the day, she knocked off Abigail Brown of Williams 6-4, 6-0 in the semifinals.
On Friday, Bui picked up wins over West Carteret’s Sasha Baker (6-0, 6-0) and Southern Lee’s Genesis Gonzalez (6-2, 6-2).
Bui’s championship marks the first time Terry Sanford has claimed the singles title since Blair Sutton won in 1993. The Bulldogs have four singles titles in school history after Bui’s win.
Terry Sanford has now won back-to-back doubles titles though. Last year, Bui teamed up with Galaviz to win the title over Fike. This year, Galaviz and Wang beat East Lincoln’s Molly McGuirk and Sidney Dunn 6-2, 7-6 (2) in the championship match.
Galaviz and Wang beat Cape Fear’s Shea Bieniek and Andi Brinker 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals earlier in the day on Saturday. On Friday, they knocked off Franklin’s Abigail Angel and Kate Phillips (6-3, 6-2) and Fike’s Zoe Mitchell and Emory Skinner (6-1, 6-1).
Terry Sanford has now won four doubles state championships as well.
