NEW YORK
The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the New York Rangers 6-1 on Tuesday, with Andrei Svechnikov scoring two goals and Pyotr Kochetkov making 28 saves. This marked their fourth consecutive victory.
Brady Skjei, a former Ranger, contributed three assists to the Hurricanes’ strong performance. Jack Drury, Jordan Martinook, Jalen Chatfield, and Michael Bunting also scored as Carolina extended their record to 7-1-3 in their past 11 games. Svechnikov has recorded points in five consecutive games, with a total of six goals.
Skjei expressed the significance of the game against a top-ranked team, as the Hurricanes closed in on the first-place Rangers by five points. He emphasized the importance of the victory and the team’s confidence in their shooting abilities, attributing their success to their talented scorers.
Chris Kreider was the only one to score for the Rangers, who have been defeated seven times this season by a margin of three or more goals.
“The Rangers captain, Jacob Trouba, commented on his team’s lackluster performance saying there was no justification for them to even participate in that game. He acknowledged their lack of resistance and credited the opposing team’s speed and opportunistic style of play. The Rangers were simply unable to match their pace.”
Following a 30-second interference penalty by Rangers’ forward Alexis Lafreniere, Drury scored his first power-play goal of his career by shooting past Igor Shesterkin.
“I was lucky to receive many accurate passes and successfully score,” stated Drury, who is 23 years old and the nephew of Chris Drury, the general manager of the Rangers.
At 19:29 of the first period, Svechnikov scored to make it 2-0 while Trouba was in the penalty box for holding. Leading scorer Sebastian Aho and defenseman Brent Burns assisted for the Hurricanes.
Aho has scored points in the last five games and is the top scorer for Carolina with a total of 43 points, which includes 15 goals. He has also made 10 assists and accumulated a total of 12 points in his last four games.
In December, Carolina had a strong power play, converting 18 out of 49 attempts for the second-highest success rate in the league after Boston.
Svechnikov expressed satisfaction with our flawless performance tonight and praised our strong power-play. He also commended Koch, noting his impressive improvement. It is thrilling to witness his success.
At 4:30 into the second period, Kreider scored his 19th goal for New York by redirecting a shot from Trouba that went past Kochetkov. Panarin also helped out with an assist and has recorded points in 30 out of the 36 games he’s played this season. He currently holds the lead on the Rangers with 51 points.
At 6:32, Martinook swiftly regained Carolina’s two-goal advantage following a mishandling of the puck by Shesterkin.
At 1:33 in the third period, Chatfield scored to make it 4-1. Just over a minute later, Svechnikov scored again at 2:56. The final goal of the game was scored by Bunting at 15:49.
In the past five games, Svechnikov and Aho have collectively accumulated 23 points.
Skjei stated that their team has been in control and there is no other way to describe it. He also mentioned that their top players have been performing exceptionally well in the past week and it’s enjoyable to see. His goal is to assist them in getting the puck.
Kochetkov, who is 24 years old, has seen an improvement in his record to 6 wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties in his last nine games playing for Carolina. However, Shesterkin’s streak of five consecutive wins was ended.
In January, the Hurricanes have eight home games and only two away games remaining.
According to Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour, we were able to convert nearly every opportunity we had for scoring tonight. We also had some crucial saves. Our recent performance has been strong, and we need to continue working hard.
