ST. PAUL, Minn.
On Tuesday night, the Carolina Hurricanes came from behind to defeat the Minnesota Wild 3-2, thanks to Stefan Noesen’s unusual goal off his face in the third period. The game took place in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Jordan Staal contributed with a goal and assist, while Andrei Svechnikov also found the back of the net for the Hurricanes. This victory marks their first win in three games and an impressive record of 10-1-2 in their last 13 away games.
As the power play was ending, Teuvo Teravainen passed to Jack Drury near the bottom of the ice. Drury’s shot was blocked by Filip Gustavsson but deflected off Noesen’s face as he was being held by Dakota Mermis, landing near the left post.
The coach, Rod Brind’Amour, expressed that it was pleasant to finally have some of those that we haven’t had in a long time. It is believed that things will balance out eventually, but we may still have a few more to come. However, we are grateful for what we have now.
Connor Dewar and Jonas Brodin netted goals for Minnesota, who suffered only their second defeat in 10 matches following the All-Star break. Ryan Hartman contributed assists on both tallies and Gustavsson made 25 saves.
The Wild desperately needed to gain two points, as they have a record of 7-2-1 since the All-Star break. They are currently tied with St. Louis for third place in the Western Conference standings, six points behind Nashville for the last playoff spot. Their upcoming games will be against the Predators and Blues.
Declan Chisholm, a defenseman, stated that it is important not to become discouraged by losses or overly confident by wins. Emotions may be high but it’s important to stay focused and play the long term game.
Pyotr Kochetkov, the goaltender for the Hurricanes, saved 28 shots and has only given up 13 goals in eight games this month.
Minnesota lost for only the third time in 21 games despite having the lead after the first period. They had two strong opportunities on a power play in the third period, but Kirill Kaprizov’s shot hit the post and Marco Rossi’s attempt was blocked by Kochetkov at the crease.
“According to Brodin, today’s game was fairly good. Although we had the potential to win, luck was not on our side.”
The Wild scored the first goal of the game halfway through the initial period after being held without a shot for about eight minutes. Dewar outpowered Brett Pesce in the slot and successfully shot the puck past Kochetkov for his first goal in 10 games.
Carolina dominated most of the initial period, yet managed to score only once. A powerful shot by Slavin struck Jordan Martinook and Staal was able to skillfully guide the puck into the goal at 15:26.
With the help, Jaccob Slavin equaled Justin Faulk’s record for the highest number of points (258) achieved by a defenseman in the history of the Whalers/Hurricanes franchise.
Brind’Amour stated that the individual should not be evaluated solely based on their statistics, as their contributions to the group are significantly more substantial.
In the final seconds of the period, Minnesota scored a goal thanks to a lengthy wrist shot by Brodin that managed to get through traffic, giving them a 2-1 advantage.
During the last seconds of the second period, the roles were switched and Svechnikov scored a goal with a pass from Seth Jarvis, tying the game at 2-2. The puck bounced off the inside right pad of a diving Gustavsson and crossed the goal line.
Slavin expressed that although it may not have been the most aesthetically pleasing, they were able to accomplish their goal. He emphasized the significance of earning two points at this point in the year.
