Southwest Onslow football coach Charlie Dempsey steps down
Another beach-adjacent high school head football coaching job opening has become available.
Southwest Onslow High School head football coach Charlie Dempsey confirmed with HighSchoolOT that he has stepped down as the head coach of the Stallions. He is taking a job outside of the teaching industry at Siemens Energy Corp. He says its an opportunity that he couldn’t pass up.
Dempsey was promoted to the head coaching spot in 2015. He served as an assistant from 2010-14 under legendary coach Phil Padgett. Dempsey led the Stallions to 2A East regional final appearances in 2017 and 2018. His overall record as the head coach was 58-56.
The 2024 season for Southwest Onslow ended with a 2-8 overall record.
In his playing days, Dempsey was an offensive lineman. He is a Southwest alum and played for the East Carolina Pirates. He ended his ECU career with 35 consecutive starts.
Southwest’s football program has historic weight. The Stallions won N.C. High School Athletic Association state championships in 2000, 2003, 2004, and 2013. They’ve also won seven regional championships.
With an ADM of 797, the Stallions are set to be a 4A program after the upcoming NCHSAA realignment into eight classifications.
