The first matchup of the 2023-24 season between the top two teams in the Northern Lakes 2A/3A Conference occurred on Friday evening. Southern Durham defeated South Granville with a final score of 79-73, maintaining their perfect record in conference games.

As predicted, Southern Durham and South Garner are expected to be the leading teams in the 3A and 2A divisions in the state playoffs. Nevertheless, there is still a conference championship in the Northern Lakes up for grabs. Southern has made significant progress towards securing that title with their victory on the road in Creedmoor.

South Granville stayed competitive in the first half, but Southern Durham pulled ahead with a score of 42-37 at halftime. Camren Daniels of Southern Durham had a strong offensive performance in the first quarter, scoring four out of his six 3-pointers for the game.

During the third quarter, the athleticism of Southern Durham became dominant. The Spartans were able to create numerous steals in a row and turn them into points on the opposite side of the court. This gave them a substantial lead that they maintained until the end. Going into the final quarter, Southern was ahead 69-54.

The South Granville team made a last-minute effort in the final two minutes of the game to decrease the point difference to only six.

Southern Durham currently has a record of 9 wins and 4 losses for the season, with a perfect conference record of 4 wins and 0 losses. On the other hand, South Granville’s overall record is 12 wins and 4 losses, with 5 wins and 1 loss in league play.
