South Stanly hands North Stanly its first loss, takes conference tournament championship
MOUNT PLEASANT, N.C. — North Stanly entered Thursday night undefeated, but exited with a resounding loss thanks to its rival.
South Stanly didn’t just keep the Comets from sweeping Yadkin Valley Conference regular season and tournament titles, they stopped them cold.
With nine runs in the last three innings, including a five-run top of the fifth, the Rebel Bulls won the conference tournament championship by a 10-1 score in a matchup hosted by Mount Pleasant.
The Rowdy Rebel Bulls (20-6) forced the Comets (24-1) to go through four pitchers on the night. Meanwhiile, Jarrett Hinson worked six innings for South Stanly, walking five and giving up six hits but just one run with four strikeouts. Jack Crump, who went 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs and two walks, got the save as he struck out two in the bottom of the seventh.
North Stanly pushed across its only run in the bottom of the third to tie it at 1-all thanks to a Charlie Shaver RBI double to left.
South Stanly, which had only seven hits on the night and all were singles, got an RBI single by Ayden Russell, two by Crump, and two by Carter Callicutt, including a two-RBI single. Callicutt also grounded into a fielder’s choice to give him a game-high four RBIs.
The Rowdy Rebel Bulls were also aided by a few Comets miscues as well, scoring twice on passed balls, once on a balk, and once on a hit-by-pitch.
