Shutout win helps No. 7 South Brunswick complete season sweep of Hoggard

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The reigning 3A state champions continue to roll.

Kina Davis’ seventh outing with 15+ strikeouts helped South Brunswick secure its eighth shutout victory of the season. The 3-0 win on the road at Hoggard completed a regular season sweep of the Vikings.

The victory was a patented performance for Davis who reached base twice and dominated in the circle.

She kick-started a two-out rally in the top of first with an infield single. Her courtesy runner, Gracie Yopp, came around two batters later when Addison Woodruff went the other way for a base hit.

The Cougars’ 1-0 lead held until the sixth. Once again, Davis was at the center of the offense, leading off the frame with an infield hit.

Yopp moved to second on a Woodruff single, advanced to third when Lily Knox grounded out, then scored on a wild pitch. Freshman Hayden Gulick added more insurance when she ripped a ball through the left side to plate Woodruff.

Davis dealt with minimal traffic on the base paths. She yielded two hits and handed out a pair of walks to Hoggard third baseman Sami Hoemann.

Sophie Gee and Logan Ulrich had the two hits for the Vikings. Ulrich’s was a double in the bottom of the seventh.

Macey Ciamillo went the distance for Hoggard with six strikeouts. She walked one and allowed nine hits.

South Brunswick improved to 12-1 overall. The Cougars host Laney and Atlantic Collegiate Academy next week.

Hoggard fell to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in league play.
