Pittsburgh — The Shaw University Women’s soccer team used a three-goal second half to repeat as USCAA D1 Women’s Soccer National Champions defeating Bryant & Stratton Syracuse 3-1 Monday evening at Highmark Stadium.
Last season the Lady Bears defeated B&S by a score of 3-0 in the championship match.
After a scoreless first stanza, Shaw found the back of the net in the 49th minute with a rocket shot from Frida Lang off the crossbar. The Lady Bears wasted no time adding to their lead as Brianna Garbrandt used a free kick to find the top corner of the net giving Shaw a 2-0 lead.
B&S scored a goal in the 66th minute to cut the Lady Bears’ lead to 2-1. Shaw needed just 15 seconds after the ensuing kickoff to regain their two-goal cushion, as Johanna Lilja took a pass from Lang to give the Lady Bears the 3-1 lead. The Shaw defense tightened up the rest of the way shutting down any real threat as the Lady Bears went on to claim their second straight title.
The Lady Bears were the aggressors on offense outshooting their opponent 24-8 overall with 14 shots being credited on goal.
Shaw ends the 2024 season 11-6-1 overall.
