In the upcoming month, the N.C. High School Athletic Association will hold its first-ever officially-sanctioned girls wrestling championship. This is a significant event for the sport, which has steadily expanded since its inception * years ago as a “girls invitational” that promptly demonstrated its potential.

Several female wrestlers in the state have had impressive performances and could be considered the top pound-for-pound wrestlers in the state. However, only one will be awarded the prestigious Most Outstanding Wrestler title at the February championships.

As a senior, Lillian Prendergast from South Brunswick achieved an impressive record of 42 wins and 0 losses while weighing in at 100 pounds.

Lillian, the daughter of Coach David Pendergast, who has accumulated over 400 wins in his own career, is not a novice when it comes to this sport. With over 100 career wins under her belt, she is dedicated to Mount Olive.

Leah Edwards from East Rowan High School has a record of 22 wins and 0 losses, weighing 114 pounds in her junior year.

Edwards has had a challenging schedule and has only made one small decision this year. She had a record of 44-4 last year.

As a senior, Kamilah Brooks from Pasquotank County weighed 126 pounds and had a record of 37-0.

Brooks has emerged as the sole wrestler who has overcome both Cary’s Alfa G. Dominguez and Dixon’s Anabel Rodriguez on two separate occasions. These two opponents are likely to be her toughest competition in the 126 pound weight class this year.

Kennedie Snow, a junior at Havelock, has a record of 29 wins and only 1 loss with a weight of 132 pounds.

Snow has not been defeated by a wrestler from the same state and has achieved 22 pins. The Rams are highly likely to be considered the top contenders for the girls’ team tournament championship.

As a senior, Brooke Zak from Currituck County has a record of 24 wins and 0 losses, weighing 138 pounds.

Zak, a returning champion from last year’s invitational, has maintained her winning streak this year by pinning all but five of her opponents and scoring tech falls against two others.
