NEW YORK
Seth Jarvis scored two goals as the Carolina Hurricanes quickly took a three-goal advantage in the opening period, leading to a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Tuesday evening.
Jake Guentzel, who was acquired before the trade deadline, performed well with a goal and two assists for Carolina. Pyotr Kochetkov was able to block 30 shots, leading the Hurricanes to their fourth victory in a row and tying their franchise record with six consecutive wins on the road. Martini Necas also contributed a goal, while Brady Skjei had two assists.
“I am doing my best to contribute to the team, especially with the talented players we have. Our line has been on a successful streak lately and it’s been enjoyable. Let’s hope we can continue this momentum and see where it takes us,” stated Guentzel.
Kyle Palmieri of the New York team successfully scored. Ilya Sorokin, the goalkeeper for the Islanders, made 31 saves. However, this was not enough to win as they suffered their fifth consecutive loss and were outscored 20-6 during this time.
The Islanders are still not in the Eastern Conference playoffs, and their chances of making it are getting smaller with every defeat.
At 19:58 of the first period, Necas scored a crucial power-play goal for the Carolina team. The player, who is from Czechia, skillfully maneuvered into the offensive zone and took a wrist shot that beat Sorokin’s blocker in the final seconds, giving his team a three-goal lead. Assisting on the goal were Evgeny Kuznetsov and Skjei.
“That’s a significant goal,” said Coach Rod Brind’Amour of the Hurricanes. “At the end of the first quarter, it was a power play and a remarkable individual effort. I wouldn’t say it sealed the game, but it definitely provided a comfortable lead and a crucial goal.”
At 12:48, Jarvis made the first goal by pushing a puck between Sorokin’s legs. He then got his second goal of the game and 25th of the season at 14:53, using a single shot from the slot.
“I anticipate Guentzel, as a top-tier player, to execute those types of maneuvers, and he delivered,” Jarvis commented on Guentzel’s performance. “He effectively drew in multiple defenders, leaving me with an open shooting opportunity from the slot, giving me the whole net to aim for.”
Fasching was a late addition to the lineup and Pierre Engvall did not dress after participating in warmups. Engvall, who signed a seven-year contract extension with New York this past offseason, was a healthy scratch for the third time this season and first time under new coach Patrick Roy.
At 4:30 of the third period, Palmieri effortlessly grabbed a rebound from Nelson’s wrist shot and scored with a backhand, putting the Islanders on the scoreboard and ending Kochetkov’s chance at a shutout.
Islanders coach Patrick Roy expressed disappointment in losing the hockey game, but also saw it as an opportunity for growth and improvement.
Guentzel scored a goal into an empty net during the final minutes of the third period.
Brent Burns, a defenseman for the Hurricanes, played in 830 consecutive games, which tied him with Andrew Cogliano for the seventh-highest streak in NHL history.
