The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Calgary Flames 7-2 on Sunday with notable contributions from Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov, who each scored a goal and provided two assists.

Aho and Svechnikov were among the seven players who scored a goal for the Hurricanes. The team has won three consecutive games since improving their lineup through trades in order to make a strong push for the playoffs.

Carolina’s Jalen Chatfield, Brent Burns, Seth Jarvis, Jordan Martinook, and Teuvo Teravainen all found the back of the net in the game. Jordan Staal and Jesperi Kotkaniemi both contributed with two assists each, and a total of 11 players on the Hurricanes’ roster earned at least one point.

According to Chatfield, the team was invigorated by the addition of new players, namely Evgeny Kuznetsov and Jake Guentzel, who joined the team recently.

Chatfield stated that the trade deadline is a crucial time in the year and acknowledged the significance of acquiring two players for their team.

Dryden Hunt and Yegor Sharangovich scored for the Flames, who have lost three of their past four games. Dan Vladar made 33 saves for Calgary.

The Hurricanes did not acquire a new goalie, however they welcomed back Frederik Andersen last week after he was sidelined for a prolonged period due to a blood-clotting problem. In only his second game within four days, Andersen recorded 18 saves for the Hurricanes. As the team’s primary goalie, he had been absent for 49 games until his comeback during a 4-1 victory against Montreal at home on Thursday.

“We understand the importance of the position,” stated Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour. “In essence, we are acquiring three components simultaneously. If everything aligns, it could be quite beneficial.”

Before the designated deadline on Friday, Carolina included Kuznetsov and Guentzel to their roster. Kuznetsov has participated in two games, both resulting in victories, since transferring from Washington. However, Guentzel has not yet played due to an upper-body injury since being acquired from Pittsburgh.

“The addition of that level of skill undoubtedly improves our team,” Brind’Amour stated. “It’s now a question of finding the right fit.”

The Flames seemed to resemble a squad that had recently traded away significant members and is now focused on rebuilding. They suffered a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Florida on Saturday and had a sluggish beginning to their game on Sunday.

In the opening period, Calgary only managed to record two shots and found themselves behind 4-0 after conceding two goals in the first two minutes of the second period.

“We just got out-played, out-competed, everything,” Calgary forward Blake Coleman said. “Just an awful effort all around. You just have to have an understanding of where you are and who you’re playing.”

At 4:11 in the second period, Hunt scored a goal against Andersen, causing a temporary slowdown in Carolina’s offensive strategy.

The Hurricanes scored two additional goals during the second period, one from Burns at 13:55 and a late goal from Jarvis with only 34 seconds remaining.

Carolina’s top scorer on the current season, Aho, initiated their offense by assisting Martinook at 6:30 in the opening period. Aho then scored his 25th goal of the season with 2:37 remaining in the first period, following a skillful passing play with Teuvo Teravainen.

The Hurricanes had a productive scoring day with multiple players earning points. Jaccob Slavin set a new franchise record for career points by a defenseman (259 in 648 games) when he assisted in Burns’ goal during the second period.

The Flames will play against Colorado at home on Tuesday.
