Sawyer Chapman-Mays scores 4 touchdowns as Alexander Central dominates Wilkes Central
TAYLORSVILLE, N.C. — Alexander Central junior running back Sawyer Chapman-Mays carried his team to a convincing 54-14 win over Wilkes Central on Friday night.
Chapman-Mays rushed for 69 yards and four touchdowns on 10 carries, leading the Cougars to their Week 2 win.
Early in the first quarter, Chapman-Mays scored his first touchdown on an 11-yard run, which capped of a 79-yard drive for Alexander Central. Later in the quarter, Wade Queen broke an 87-yard run for another touchdown and Alexander Central led 14-0 after one quarter.
Wilkes Central got on the board in the first minute of the second quarter. Noah McNeil scored on a six-yard run for Wilkes Central, but Chapman-Mays answered the challenge.
Before halftime, Chapman-Mays scored two more touchdowns — on on a two-yard run and another on a 16-yard run — to give Alexander Central a 20-7 lead.
With 16 seconds left before halftime, McNeil recorded a passing touchdown with a 25-yard pass to Jermaine Ferguson. Wilkes Central cut the Alexander Central lead to 27-14 at halftime.
The second half was all Alexander Central though. The Cougars scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to create separation.
Jeremiah Whitaker scored on a 24-yard run, the Cole Pennell broke into the end zone from two yards out. Chapman-Mays scored his last touchdown of the night on a five-yard run, and Alexander Central led 47-14 after three quarters.
The Cougars got one more touchdown from Blake Combs on a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter to secure the 54-14 win.
Queen led Alexander Central in rushing with 116 yards and a touchdown on just four carries. Whitaker finished with 89 rushing yards and a touchdown on nine carries, and Combs posted 39 yards and one touchdown on four carries.
Alexander Cenral only threw two passes in the game, completing one for 36 yards to Micah Chapman.
The Cougars’ defense also managed to force four fumbles in the game, recovering two of them.
Wilkes Central was led in rushing by Marlin Owens, who recorded 65 yards on five carries. McNeil finished the game 8-of-12 passing for 108 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 57 yards and a touchdown.
Alexander Central (1-1) returns to action next Friday at 7 p.m. when it travels to North Iredell. Wilkes Central (0-2) will host R-S Central on Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.
