Roxboro Community softball defeats Vance Charter to win seventh straight
OXFORD, N.C. – Almost a year removed from being on the doorstep of a state championship appearance, Roxboro Community is heating up at the right time.
The Bulldogs pounded 15 hits as a team and picked up 2 RBI each from Carlie White and Leah Griffin in an 8-1 win over Vance Charter on Tuesday evening.
White got the offense going in the top of the second when she sent a line drive the other way to plate two.
In her pursuit of becoming North Carolina’s new single-season home run queen, Karrie Obie was held to a 1-for-3 performance with a hit by pitch.
One pitch after coaxing Obie into a third-inning pop-out, Presley Leonard launched a solo home run to push the Roxboro Community lead to 3-0.
Two batters later, Griffin singled in fellow freshman Lexi Powell to grab a 4-0 advantage.
The lead was plenty for Kaylyn Pope, who tossed a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts. She scattered eight walks and allowed Vance Charter’s lone run on a groundout in the bottom of the seventh.
Roxboro Community added runs in each of the final three innings to put the game on ice.
Griffin grounded out to score Leonard in the fifth, Katie Mann brought home Ava Talley with a sixth-inning single, Powell crossed for the third time in the game on a seventh-inning sacrifice, and Talley closed out her perfect 5-5 day at the plate with an RBI single to plate Griffin.
The Bulldogs have won seven in a row and sit 14-5 overall. They close out the regular season on April 28 and 30 at Oxford Prep and back home against Vance Charter.
