Roundup of Holiday Events: Boys and girls from Hillside sweep day two of the Champion Durham Classic.

On the second day of the Champion Durham Classic, hosted by the Durham Sports Commission, Hillside High School triumphed in both the boys’ and girls’ categories against their county rivals.

The Lady Hornets defeated Southern Durham, bringing their record to 2-0 in the round robin tournament. The boys also won against Durham School of the Arts in the first of two games this week.

The girls from Millbrook began the day with a crucial victory, breaking their streak of 8 consecutive losses. At halftime, the Wildcats held a slight lead of 13-12 and then extended it with a strong performance in the third quarter, ultimately winning 36-24 against Durham School of the Arts.

The North Raleigh Christian team broke their losing streak by defeating Jordan 66-43. Despite starting with a 6-0 deficit, the Knights managed to turn the game around with a 16-5 run in the first half. McKenzie Smith and McKenzie Graves were the top scorers with 20 points each.

In the first half, Jayde Braswell and Brendon Watley led the Hillside boys’ team with a strong start, giving them an 8-point lead. Quentin Cozart scored 8 points in the third quarter, while Braswell ended the game with 17 points, making him the top scorer for the Hornets. The Hornets defeated the Bulldogs with a final score of 74-31, thanks to their strong defense in the second half that only allowed DSA to score 12 points.

Hillside emerged victorious in the final game of the night, defeating Southern Durham 57-50 and avenging their previous loss of 63-61 in overtime, which occurred less than two weeks ago. The Hornets had a strong start with six different players scoring in the first quarter, giving them a 16-10 lead. Despite a close second half, Hillside maintained their seven-point lead from halftime to secure the win.

Samiyah Barker and Alyssa Malone led Hillside in scoring with 13 points each during the final stretch of the game. The Hornets currently hold a record of 7-5 and will face Millbrook on Thursday.

The last day of competition begins on Thursday at 3:00pm with a match between North Raleigh Christian Academy and Durham School of the Arts. The Knights are hoping to secure a 2-1 record while the Bulldogs are striving for their first win of the week.

The 4:30pm time slot will showcase two county non-conference rivals, Southern Durham and Jordan’s girls, facing off. Both teams hold a record of 1-1 going into the final day. Following their respective wins over DSA this week, Cummings and Hillside’s boys will play at 6:00pm. The last game of the day will be a rematch between Millbrook and Hillside girls, with the Hornets securing a 81-50 victory in their previous matchup on December 5th.
