Reidsville’s Dionte Neal named Gatorade NC Player of the Year in boys basketball

Reidsville High School junior point guard Dionte Neal has been named North Carolina’s top high school basketball player by Gatorade.

Neal was named the Gatorade NC Player of the Year on Thursday, less than a week after he led the Rams to the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A state championship for the second consecutive season.

Standing at 5-foot-9 and 150 pounds, Neal averaged 22.8 points, 9.1 assist, 7.0 steals, and 4.9 rebounds per game this past season. He scored 24 points, recorded five rebounds, and dished out four assists in the state championship win over Northwood.

Neal shot 61.5% from three-point range and 88.1% from the free throw line. He enters his senior season with 1,870 career points and 895 career assists.

Reidsville posted a 31-0 record this season and the Rams have won 60 consecutive games.

According to 247Sports.com, Neal is a three-star prospect in basketball. He has offers from Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Hampton, High Point, NC A&T, NC Central, UNC-Greensboro, and Western Carolina.

Earlier this week, Neal was named the North Carolina MaxPreps High School Basketball Player of the Year. Neal was named to the HighSchoolOT All-State Team as a sophomore, but all-state teams for this year’s basketball season have not yet been released.

Last week, Neal was selected to the All-District Team as a first team selection by the N.C. Basketball Coaches Association.

Neal is also the quarterback for the Reidsville football team where he completed 170-of-228 passes for 2,495 yarsd and 29 touchdowns with four interceptions. He also rushed for 583 yards and eight touchdowns. Neal was named to the HighSchoolOT All-State Team for football as well.

Outside of sports, Neal has volunteered at the Reidsville Family YMCA and with the Reidsville Recreation Department. He holds a weighted 3.69 grade point average.
