Raleigh Charter outpaces reigning champion Pine Lake Prep to win 1A/2A girls swimming title

Raleigh Charter’s girls swimming & diving team won the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A state championship at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary on Saturday.

The Phoenix finished the day with 271.5 points, beating reigning state champion Pine Lake Prep, who finished second with 232 points.

Raleigh Charter took first place in four different events, including two relays.

Emily Lee, Christiana Hoang, Dorothy Ellen Grant, and Relina Liu won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:50.99. Later in the day, Grant, Allyson Deans, Hoang, and Liu won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:40.90, nearly five full seconds better than second place.

Liu also won gold in two individual events, including the 200-yard individual medley where she was the only swimmer to finish under the two-minute mark, finishing with a time of 1:57.46. Liu took first place in the 100-yard backstroke as well, posting a time of 55.21 seconds.

Raleigh Charter picked up a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay and a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle race from Grant.

Pine Lake Prep had one first-place finish in the championship meet. The Pride’s team of Addy McDonough, Sophie Storie, Campbell Kolbay, and Grace McCarthy won gold in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:42.89.

N.C. Science & math, Lincoln Charter, and Christ the King rounded out the top five in the team standings.

Daisy Collins of Woods Charter was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer of the state championship meet. Collins took home gold medals in the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle races with times of 1:47.92 and 4:45.36 respectively. She was the only swimmer to crack the five-minute mark in the 500-yard freestyle race, beating second place by more than 20 seconds.

This is the seventh state championship for the Raleigh Charter girls swimming & diving program. All seven came at the 1A/2A level and the last happened in 2018.

Prior to each state championship event, the NCHSAA recognizes atheltes who show good sportsmanship during the course of the season. The Sportsmanship Award winners for the 1A/2A girls swimming state championship were Katie Hu of Raleigh Charter and Sydney Haun of Pine Lake Prep.
