QB Bryce Young won’t play in Panthers’ preseason opener :: WRALSportsFan.com
Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young will not play in the team’s first preseason game and may not play at all in the preseason.
Carolina opens preseason play at New England on Thursday (7 p.m., FOX 50)
Young, the No. 1 overall pick in 2023, started 16 games as a rookie for Carolina, which went 2-14 in his starts. Young threw for 2,877 yards and 11 touchdowns as a rookie while completing 59.8 percent of his passes.
The Panthers are in their first season under head coach Dave Canales.
“We’ll take that kind of week to week and get a sense of do we need to get him out there in this system and get a couple of series and do that,” Canales said Tuesday.

Canales was the offensive coordinator in Tampa Bay last season when the Buccaneers played both candidates for their starting quarterback job in the preseason.
“This is different,” Canales said. “We know who our guy is, and he’s doing a fantastic job.”
Veteran backup quarterback Andy Dalton is also out. Jack Plummer will start and recently signed Jake Lutton will play, too.
Former UNC quarterback Drake Maye, the No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft by New England, will play in Thursday’s game. Former NC State quarterback Jacoby Brissett will start for the Patriots.
Canales said he is still deciding on which starters will play and which ones will sit out the first game of the preseason. The Panthers host the New York Jets on Aug. 17 in their second of three preseason games.
Carolina opens the regular season on Sept. 8 at New Orleans.
