Providence’s Dimenna wins 4A singles title; Green Hope’s Gervase, Indlamur win doubles
Green Hope had a chance to sweep the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A individual boys tennis state championship at Millbrook Exchange Park on Saturday, but the Falcons fell short in the single finale.
Jimin Jung of Green Hope was defeated by Jack Dimenna of Providence in the 4A singles state championship match, one that went down to the wire.
Dimenna rallied after dropping the first set to Jung by a 5-7 score. Dimenna won the second set 6-3, then the decisive third set 7-5, clinching the 4A singles title.
The win by Dimenna hands Providence its first singles state championship in boys tennis in school history. The only other individual title for Providence was a doubles title in 1999 won by Scott Curry and Chad York.
Dimenna’s road to the championship included a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ethan Garcia of Apex in the semifinals on Saturday morning. On Friday, he defeated Grimsley’s Yash Hain 6-1, 6-1 in the first round, then took out Page’s Ben Powell 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
Jung started the tournament with a win by forfeit against Northwest Guilford’s Ishan Mahapatra. In the quarterfinals, Jung defeated Ardrey Kell’s Dhavik Chenemiller 6-4, 6-4, then on Saturday he beat Eshaan Dabadghav of Northwest Guilford 7-5, 6-1 in the semifinals.
Green Hope was able to win the doubles championship though, as the duo of Stephen Gervase & Vivek Indlamur took first place in another down-to-the-wire finish.
After dropping the first set 5-7 to Hough’s doubles team of Jesus Espinoza & Jackson Davis, Gervase & Indlamur won the second set 6-3 and the third set 6-2 to win the championship.
Saturday’s win hands Green Hope its second doubles state title in school history, the first won by Vivek Ramesh and Vineet Ramesh in 2019. It’s the second individual boys tennis state title for the Falcons.
Gervase and Indlamurl defeated Providence’s Grant Partridge and Daniel Rohlman 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in the semifinals earlier in the day on Saturday. Friday’s action included a 6-1, 6-0 win over Lake Norman’s Aiden Aldrich & Nimish Kandekar, as well as a 6-2, 6-7 [8-10], 6-1 win over South Mecklenburg’s Luke Thompson & Connor Yett.
Espinoza & Davis began their tournament with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Brian Eddleman & Owen Edmondson of Sanderson, then defeated Jordan’s duo of Will Furman & Devak Coltrane 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. The semifinals were much tougher, as the Hough team defeated Green Hope’s Brij Bhatt & Aidan Xu 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 to deny the Falcons a chance at an all-Green Hope doubles championship.
