It is a good sign for North Carolina’s four ACC schools to be included despite their later entries into the sweepstakes. Multiple SEC schools offered before the first in-state ACC school did.
Career Timeline
- 2022-23 football season: As a freshman, Surratt played on Crest’s varsity team. Before the season, he was named to HighSchoolOT’s freshman watch list. The young player compiled 58 total tackles, two tackles for a loss, two interceptions, three pass breakups, and a forced fumble. Crest finished with a 9-4 overall record and advanced to the third round of the NCHSAA 3A playoffs, where the Chargers lost to Big South Conference rival South Point 21-20.
- 2022-23 basketball season: Surratt was also an instant starter for the varsity basketball team. As a freshman, he averaged 10.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.1 steals. The Chargers finished with a 21-8 overall record and advanced to the fourth round of the NCHSAA 3A playoffs, where they lost to eventual state champion Central Cabarrus.
- 2023-24 football season: The safety had similar tackling production as a sophomore with 57 total stops, but his ball production increased to five interceptions and six pass breakups. Crest finished the season with a 13-1 overall record, losing at home in the fourth round of the NCHSAA 3A playoffs to Dudley by 12 points.
- 2023-24 basketball season: Surratt’s scoring efficiency improved to 13.3 points per game and he averaged 4.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.5 steals. Crest finished 20-5 overall, still making the 3A playoffs, but was knocked out by Southern Guilford a round earlier than Surratt’s freshman year.
- 2024-25 football season: Crest finished with a 10-3 overall record in Surratt’s junior year. The Chargers were knocked out in the third round of the 3A playoffs by Hickory. Surratt posted stat totals of 43 tackles (3.3/gm), one tackle for a loss, four interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, four pass breakups, 139 return yards, and one catch for a 42-yard touchdown on offense.
- 2024-25 football season: Surratt was named an honorable mention selection to the 2024 HSOT All-State Football Team.
- 2024-25 football season: Surratt was named Second Team All-Region for HSOT’s All-704 team.
- 2024-25 basketball season: Crest achieved its third consecutive 20-win season with Surratt on the varsity basketball team. Crest finished 22-4 after losing on a buzzer-beater to eventual state champion Ben L. Smith in the fourth round. Surratt averaged 14.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.7 steals. He crossed 1,000 career points at the end of his junior season. He was named All-Big South Conference.
