Don’t worry about a thing because every little thing is gonna be all right. Rise up this morning, smile, rising sun, sun. Three little birds is by my doorstep singing sweet songs of melody, pure and true singing. This is my message to you. You think the panthers would have booed me? Yeah, they might have, they might have. I’ll be back. Well, Chris’s wife, tears, get the, get dialed in. Panthers fans. Here comes an in depth. Look at your team exclusive interviews, locker room in sight. Let’s huddle up. Let’s just do it. Ok. For Panthers playbook driven by Carolina Ford Dealers here are your hosts, Dennis Cox and Chris Lee. Welcome back to another episode of Panthers Playbook. That is Chris Lee. Dennis Cox here with you. Um, here’s the, uh, Chris, you know, one thing that could wipe the tears away, which by the way, Panthers playbook, sponsored by our good friends over at Carolina Ford dealers. Carolina Ford Dealers with Ford F 150 on your team. It’s game on, see your Carolina Ford dealer today. Uh, Chris, uh, we can wipe away some tears this weekend. Um, whether that’s people that are maybe listening and watching today during joint practice against the New York Jets or Saturday against the New York Jets in a preseason game, we could wipe the tears away if we see the first team offensive defense on the field. That’s, that’s all, that’s really what I’m looking for. I wanna see the first team offense. I really wanna gauge how much this offense has improved because we have nothing to go off of. Yes. By the way, for the people who didn’t get it, the song we were singing was a little Dave Canalis singing in front of everybody. That video came out just in case you missed it. Go to the Panthers social media pages so you could check that out. Dave Canalis did a decent job. I feel like I did a bit better. You probably, you know, we’ll see but yes, um against the Jets, that’s really the main thing I want to see and I feel like it’s, it’s a great opportunity for that one. This is the only preseason home game. Uh they’re gonna go on the road next week to go against Buffalo. So you can really understand, especially right before the season. That’s gonna be all of the guys who are about to get cut so you can put on, you know, good tape for other teams to see what that’s out there or the last few positional, you know, battles out there like, hey, who’s gonna beat who out to stay on the team, but this is a great opportunity just for us to see ones versus ones. Um, I doubt we’re gonna see Aaron Rodgers in the actual game. Um, so, but we can still at least see the Carolina Panthers offense versus maybe Quintin Williams and the rest that Sauce Gartner and all of those other guys on the Jets defense. Here’s one of those things last year. Quintin Williams called out the Panthers offensive line during that, uh, that joint practice that they had in Charlotte, he in, in Spartanburg, excuse me, he said if it weren’t for the fact that we couldn’t, uh, this is, you know, verbatim, this isn’t verbatim if it weren’t for the fact that we couldn’t sack the quarterback, I would have had a sack on every play. That’s essentially what he was saying about what was going on with Bryce Young. And so one of the things I’m going to be looking for coming out of this joint practice is, is Quintin Williams saying the same thing and what is he gonna see it going against Damian Lewis and going against Robert Hunt and going against Austin Corbett as, uh, the, the center, what is, what is his, uh, viewpoint gonna be of that new offensive line? Then also will the Panthers be able to move the ball? We saw how bad they looked against the Jets in the preseason. And also, um, you know, you know, I guess we’re not gonna really count the, the, uh, joint practice. Uh, but, you know, in the preseason game, they didn’t look very good against them. So that was a precursor for the whole season. That was a precursor for the entire season. So, but that’s that, those are the main things I’ll be looking for. And then also, um, I would like to see the defense just a little bit, uh, go out there. What does Shaq Thompson, uh, look like next to Josey Jewel? I’m itching to see that against the number of ones on offense. So, you know, those are the things I’ll be looking for. Hopefully that ends up working out for the fans. I, I want to see Jadeveon Clowney out there with a Shaun Robinson and Derek Brown out there and I don’t know, it’s Echo Leota. How does he show maybe if he gets reps against the, the first team JC Horns, JC, I want to see JC Horn, you know, covering Garrett Wilson with Aaron Rodgers throwing passes. I wanna see that too. Now, there are some injuries and things like that that probably gonna prevent some guys from participating in the joint practice. We’re, we’re recording this before joint practice starts or even Saturday, Dane Jackson defensive back on Wednesday left with a hamstring tightness. So what they said that was during one V ones. So, uh his availability question Johnson, I was gonna say Deontay Johnson mild growing strain day to day. I could see it where they’re not gonna try and push him. I totally understand that Damie Lewis is still coming back from a shoulder injury. Also had a personal matter that kept him away from the team for a few days. Dave Canalis said Wednesday trying to work his conditioning back up. So maybe we don’t see the full complement of five starting offensive linemen to be determined. Obviously, you know, with how things are gonna progress during the week. But this is the closest thing that we’re gonna get to gauging what this offense looks like. And I honestly truly hope that on Saturday, we do see the first team offense out there at least for a series or two, even if it’s three. And now, even if it’s three and now I just want to see it, I still want to see them out there because it’s the only true way we can actually really gauge, yes, there’s joint practice against other team or against another team, but it’s still practice. It still isn’t fully game like preseason game is the closest thing you’re gonna get to actually playing a regular season game. And I understand people say, hey, well, the games are meaningless. They’re not. Why should they play, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, guess what Patrick Holmes played. Uh, Joe Burrows played, Josh Allen has played. There’s a whole slew of guys in the NFL who don’t need to prove anything that played in a preseason game. So far this year CJ Strout played in a preseason game or already this season, Panthers have not and I’m sorry, the Panthers were the worst offense in the league last year. They need as many live reps as possible. Chris, and I feel like we’re probably gonna see some of that, um, you know, on Wednesday when Dave Knaus was talking to the media afterwards, he said he’s kind of like in that in the middle ground of, you know, go all out for the joint practice and, uh, you know, also playing for, uh, the, the preseason game and, but he said he wants to see the operation that’s there. He wants to see kind of, um, you know, if how things are gonna kind of run and just for his sake, this is his first time being a head coach. He’s gonna want to get some practice with his ones with Bryce Young in particular of, I’m calling in this play, I’m getting, you know, whatever calls from, um, from my support staff from up top, from around me, they’re keeping me abreast on what’s going on, how many, uh, uh, ti uh time outs I have, what’s the situation, you know, what our protocol calls for in this particular, uh, situation down a distance. So, like, I think you want to see the full complement of all that and it feels like if you’re just kind of reading between the lines of what Dave Canal said last week, you could kind of tell he’s not gonna play Bryce Young for the first preseason game, kinda could tell that this week it feels like and, you know, this could age like milk, but this week it feels like, um, we’re gonna see those ones for at least one series. Honestly, I would like to see him for two series against the Jets just to, just to get the jitters out and just to put it out there because I know we’re not going to see them next week versus the Bills. So I let’s see him this week. I know Xavier Le get returned to practice on Wednesday was a full participant. Same thing with Shaq Thompson. I’m hoping to see those guys get, especially Xavier Le get, get out there on the field as well. Again, the Deon Johnson growing strain like, all right, like that guy is a little bit more proven if he’s not ready to go, that’s ok. Maybe in the third preseason game up in Buffalo, we’ll see about that. But, but if he could give us 11 good route and one good catch, take him out because I just, I just want to see it. I wanna see if he does get that separation. I, I wanna see it as well from the practices I’ve been to at training camp. Uh Yeah, the guy definitely does and I know he’s gonna do it against the Panthers. Did he do it against the horn who we talked about as one of the best corners in the league like we, we’ve said it and a lot of people around the league will say as long as he just stays healthy, um, hopefully knocking on wood, these guys stay healthy. But, uh, depth is a major question and I know, uh, on the preseason game that we had on Thursday of last week, Chris, some of the backup guys got some pretty good grades according to pro football focus. Now, pro football focus, I take their grade, their grades, uh, with grains of salt and multiple cracks of black pepper. Um, because again, one thing, the pro football focus season it a little bit. Exactly. I mean, that’s what you gotta do. Um, but here’s the thing, you Sprinkle a little paprika on there because here’s the thing, they don’t always understand what the, the, the, what the assignments are and those kinds of things. So they, again, you take these grades with a grain of salt, but there are guys that we saw were just with our eyes, eye tests that popped off on screen like echo Leota got a high grade from pro football focus. Taylor Zavala actually, surprisingly, to me actually got a pretty high grade. So those are the kinds of things that all right, you’re going against New England’s backups and New England we know is not a very good team whom, by the way, they traded Matthew Judon to the Atlanta Falcons. Boy. So I get ready and, and, and only for a third round pick, which kind of made me wonder, um, Panthers if, if that was available, if that was available, you know, that’d be nice him, you know, we could have had a sound Reddick still on the team, but, you know, that’s a different situation. Hey, May, maybe Hassan Reddick, uh, comes down with the team. I know he’s, you know, trying to hold out and all that stuff he’s asking for a trade. Maybe he comes down with the Jets and, uh has like a nice little talk, nice little chat with uh Dan Morgan on the side. You know, that’s the thing like, hey, look, you’ve been here before, like, I’m sure you had a nice favorite barbecue spot down there in Charlotte or something like that place. You like to go eat, like just hop on the plane, it’s already booked. Come on down, hang out. Where do you already know and just, just, just, just stick around for a have, have we introduced you to Bryce? This is Bryce, Bryce. No, not by sacking him, you know, just by the handshake up handshake and you know, saying, hey, I’m gonna be playing for you on the other side to try to get these uh, turnovers so you can come back on the field and do your thing. Hopefully that is something that happens. But just to go back to what we were starting off talking about uh with which is uh the grades from last week. You, you, you said it eulo um you take this with a grain of salt but EOA is the person who really jumped off the page for us the most. You got the highest, highest grade at 90.2 on the team for the Panthers. Uh And that’s according, this is all according to pro football focus. Luigi Villa Villain had the second highest grade 89.9 which is very interesting to me. And here’s one of the things too, right when it comes down to those, uh, you know, edge rushers outside linebackers, um, you know, a lot of this defense really specifies them setting the edge. So, uh, if you can force your guy on the inside so somebody else can get the tackle, then you’ve pretty much done your job. And so sometimes if sometimes it may not always be about how many tackles, how many sacks you can get. Although we want to see that a lot of times, especially if you’re playing a run and you can force somebody back on the inside so that, uh, Big Derek Brown can be the one to tackle somebody. And I, I feel confident that he can do that or even, you know, Shaq or Josey Jewel, that’s the big thing. And Luigi Villa didn’t necessarily have any plays to me that stood out. But if you go back and, and watch the tape. I’m pretty sure if he had this high of a grade, I’m pretty sure he did his job, uh, pretty well if, if his grade was that high. So it’ll be interesting to go back and look at the tape. Jordan Matthews 87.7. Um, it’s been interesting hearing from him this past week. I want that guy, I want him on the team. I want that guy on my team. He, because you, you heard him after practice, uh, this past week, first off, he’s a man, right? And this is a younger team now. And you’re gonna need more experienced veterans, people who’ve been around winning cultures. He was with the Eagles, he was with the 49er. He knows about winning and want that guy around. And also he flashed on tape. He was probably the best throws that, uh, Jack, uh, what’s his name? I was gonna call him Jack Hammer a plumber, Jack plumber, not Jack Hammer. That Jackhammer ain’t drilling, dude. There’s a joke there that we probably should not explore. But, um, Jack Plummer had his best looking plays throwing to Jordan Matthews, uh, in the game last week. And so I wanna see that guy on and then, uh, you had Claude and she, uh, with the fourth best, uh, grade and then Chandler Zavala, who had the, uh, fifth best overall grade and shout outs to Lamar Jackson. Yo, who was targeted five times, three yards allowed. Mm, two forced incompletions when throwing his direction. He had a, uh the quarterbacks had a 39.6 passer rating and uh he had an 86.8 coverage grade. Now you talk about battles and people trying to make a team Lamar Jackson, uh and, and Alex Cook, they both really stood out when it comes down to that Panthers um uh secondary. So those guys seem like they’re winners, they’re willing tacklers and they, we’re really trying to strap people in if these guys keep playing to this level, I feel good, especially about our defense. But also we talked about that depth, building that depth uh when it comes down to having those extra bodies that we’re going to need. And so, um biggest thing coming out of this though is that I want Jordan Matthews on his team. Yeah, I really do and I just, his experience, obviously, he was a wide receiver when he started his crew when he got drafted in Philadelphia. I mean, he’s had multiple seasons of 65 70 80 80 plus catches. So he’s been productive as a wide receiver, had some injuries and stuff. And then when he got to San Francisco, he said the stuff that he was being asked to do was basically was like a tight end. So he actually pitched the idea to Kyle Shanahan. He’s like, why don’t you guys move me to tight end? This was during the off season and he goes, and Kyle Shanahan told him if you bulk up to 235 we’re all in because he’s six weeks, by the way, yeah, six weeks and he did it and he did it and he still has that pass catching ability. He still has the ability to, to run his routes and do all the things. I mean, he probably is ticks slower because of age and obviously gaining some weight. But nonetheless, the guy still knows how to get open, still has reliable hands. And I’d much rather have him. He showed it to his line packer or safety. But like you said, Chris, a veteran guy who’s been through it, he doesn’t mess around in the locker room is something that he talked about as well. He gets out to practice 30 minutes early because he says ain’t nothing in this locker room for me. Everything I gotta do is out there on that field setting. That example, like you said, for a young team with young tight ends like Tommy Trimble and Ta ta and Sanders and young wide receivers like Jonathan Mingo, like me, Smith Marcet, like Xavier Lee, get all these young players need to have that example and you know what, he could probably still be reliable for you as well. And he said, you know what, I’ll, I’ll play special teams too. I’ll, I’ll do those kinds of things. A guy who’s willing to do that stuff has been willing to evolve in his career. You can’t have that guy. You can’t have enough of those guys in your locker room teaching guys stuff that we don’t actually see on the field. Those intangible things go a long, long way for these young guys. It feels like a cheat code, potentially having him on the field, uh, for you if you’re the Carolina Panthers, because again, Jordan Matthews veteran, uh, wide receiver who’s now a tight end. So now you don’t have to worry about cutting down further in your, uh wide receiver room if there are guys that you like. And now you can add in this guy who you can essentially use him as a big wide receiver because I mean, Kelvin Benjamin was 235 plus. Well, he also gained some weight because he was speaking of weight. Um, you know, so if you need, if you need, you know, uh, Jordan Matthews to go out wide or, or to, you know, do whatever else play in the slot, whatever you need him to do, I’m sure that they can ask him to do that if that were the case. But then also he could be there in the tight end room and help out somebody like you mentioned it, Javi and Sanders and also Tommy Trimble, not only become better tight ends but become better pass catchers and route runners because that is one of the things that he is, he specializes in. So, um, it, it, it really does feel like a cheat code. It is kind of amazing that there wasn’t a bigger market for this guy. Um, and, and that we’re not expecting him to be 50 catches, you know, this season getting, you know, 800 yards or anything like that. I’m not expecting that, but I am expecting, you know, when somebody needs to get open scramble drill or you just need to get the first down, uh, or you need, you need to have your guys out there that, you know, you can count on to get uh this ball down the field because we need to score right now to win the game. Have Jordan Matthews in and some good things can happen. I think the Panthers are in a good position having him on that squad 100% with you. You’re talking about not taking away from the wide receiver room. Uh When’s terrace Marshall Junior getting cut, you know what? Um I don’t see him making the team me and I don’t know if I don’t remember if we did this after the, the show um last week or, you know, after the game. Um But I think me and you talked about this separately. Definitely Deonte Adam Thiele Xavier ligue Mingo for sure he’s been stepping up. Um, and Amir Smith Mars, that’s six. So now, you know, we, we questioned it a few weeks ago that five right there to me is set that six is probably David Moore because um, one he’s been in this system, he is somebody who can, you can also use in the return game. Yep. And so you can have multiple, uh, you know, spots for him. And I, I just think that with what we’ve seen so far, bro, like, you know, I, I had a lot of hope for Terrace Marshall but, you know, if you can make it work with somebody else, cool. We’ve given you a lot of opportunity now with three different coaches, this is the beginning of the fourth season. Like, when are we going to see it? You know, we saw it a little bit, um, you know, at the end of the, um, Steve Wilkes era here when he was the interim head coach, but when are we gonna see it, bro? And we haven’t really seen it. I haven’t seen it much at all. Hopefully he’ll show something in joint practice and in Saturday’s preseason game, by the way, we’ll have another episode for you all Sunday.
