Panthers Playbook: Bryce Young has something to prove as Carolina Panthers quarterback :: WRALSportsFan.com

All right, Chris, the return of Bryce Young. We’re right back to it. No excuses, no excuses for Bryce Young in his return. None. I can think of a few. No, no, no, no, no excuses for Bryce. Absolutely none. I could think of a few. Oh, really? We’re gonna talk about them. Well, let’s get this soccer started, get dialed in Panthers fans. Here comes an in depth. Look at your team exclusive interviews, locker room in sight. Let’s huddle up, let’s just do it for Panthers Playbook driven by Carolina Ford Dealers. Here are your hosts, Dennis Cox and Chris Lee. Welcome back to another episode of Panthers Playbook. That’s Chris Lee. Dennis Cox here with you. Leave your thoughts in the comments on Bryce Young. What do you expect? And Bryce Young as he gets the start this weekend in Denver because Andy Dalton has the thumb injury from the car accident he sustained on Tuesday. So we’re definitely gonna dive into that. But real quick Panthers playbook presented by our good friends over at Carolina Ford Dealers with the Ford F 150. Your team. It’s game on, see your Carolina Ford Dealer today. All right. It was announced Wednesday. Dave Canalis head coach came out in his presser and immediately said it. No, Andy Dalton Spring thumb, he’s week to week, they’re gonna maybe see if they can get him to be the number two quarterback this Sunday against the Denver Broncos. But Chris, it’s Bryce Young time once again. Right. That’s, that’s, that’s pretty much my reaction. Um, you know, there’s a lot of, uh, Panthers fans who are calling for this to happen and, and personally, or not, personally, I’m not part of that because one, I’m just not sure if Bryce is ready now, maybe he comes in and has a, a pretty good game on Sunday and proves me wrong. But, um, also just, you know, I watched the, uh, the video from him in the locker room and I don’t know if this is just Bryce and how he is, but when he first came in last year, I felt like he was this confident kid and, you know, he was sure of himself and maybe he did get that internal motivation and that he just can’t get externally. Um, but right now I’m not sure what his, even if he has that internal motivation because, you know, just during the, the scrum in the locker room, talking about the opportunity, he still seemed like ho hum same old Bryce, like, you know, just kind of shoulders down and, you know, there’s not a lot of life in, in his voice, not a lot of life in his eyes when he’s talking about the opportunity and things like that. And to me, I would think that if I’ve been training my entire life to be a starting NFL quarterback and I lost that because of my play and then I get it back. I’m over, over the moon like it, it kind of sucks how it happened because this guy that I’m considering my friend got in a car accident and he’s, uh, a little bit injured from it, but I have the opportunity and all the things, all the mental reps, I’ve been taking over the last five weeks, everything that I’ve kind of learned from the sideline. Now I get a chance to go back in and, and practice it. And so I’m just a little bit worried honestly, um, you know, I, I’m with, I’m with Dave Canalis, like, you know, Andy Dalton gave the team the best chance to win. And so, like, let’s not forget, like, yeah, Dalton had a bad game and didn’t have the best game against, uh, the Chicago, but let’s not forget what the offense looked like. Or though I don’t even know if you can even call it offense, the lack of offense, what that was the first two weeks of the season and now the guy who was leading that is coming back in, I’m just not sure right now and I’ll, I’ll let you go, but there, there are other reasons too. Oh, I’m 100% unsure as well and I think there’s a ton of Panthers fans out there that are feeling the same thing. Now we read the comments which by the way again, leave your comments down below and also follow us on your favorite podcast platform as well because this is available on Apple Spotify, you name it and leave us a nice five star review when you do so. But here’s my big concern with them. Like you just said, the lack of confidence. Did he gain it back over these last five weeks? I don’t know, we’re gonna see. But I hope, I hope that Bryce Young as the competitor, as the athlete has the internal fire to say, all right, my time to prove it. They’ve already taken the job from me once I’m gonna prove to them that they were wrong with that decision. I’m going to prove to the guys in the locker room that, hey, you know what I can play and I’m gonna prove to myself that yeah, all the stuff that I’ve done all the success that I’ve had in the past wasn’t a fluke wasn’t for nothing that I can also do it on this level. The championships I won in high school being a number one or number two recruit, depending on the recruiting service you look at in the entire country winning a Heisman in Alabama that all that. Yeah. Guess what? That all can come here to this level too, that I can bring that success. This has to be a perfect game for Bryce and I hope he has that fire internally in him because otherwise Chris, if he doesn’t, he’s done, he’s done. That’s why, that’s why I say no more excuses for Bryce. Young. None, none. He has to go do it himself. Now, here’s your chance, young man. Go do it be about it. I’m not saying he has to play the best game he’s ever played in the NFL, but it has to be top two. You know, because like the best game that we saw the best game we saw from him was that Green Bay game last year, right? And you know, we, we’ve got to see maybe not that, but at least something close to that and it’s gonna be tough because as you look down and, and talk about the Broncos third best total defense in the NFL, third, best scoring defense in the NFL, fifth, best passing defense in the NFL, 10th, best rushing defense in the NFL. So that’s where I said there might be a few excuses because I’m just not sure he’ll be able to take care of the ball. And also you have the third best scoring defense in the NFL looking at you in the face. So it’s like this is a game that on paper right now based off of what we’ve seen from Bryce young before, based off of who the Denver Broncos are right now. This can get up really fast. Kind of like a lot of Carolina Panthers games, but this one in particular can get really ugly really fast. So I’m a little scared right now and again, I believe Andy Dalton gives you the best chance to win, but if he can’t grip a ball because he has a sprained thumb, then you have to put Bryce Young in and we don’t know what we’re gonna get with that. Uh, the Denver Broncos have the best red zone touchdown percentage defensively in the entire NFL. Literally. Number one, they also have the second best in terms of sack percentage in the entire NFL. And here’s something that we know with Bryce. Well, yeah, here’s the thing. I Taylor Moton was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday. I really hope that he is back. He’s, he’s better than Josh Neiman. Brady. Chris has been doing a solid job like a really good job and he honestly might be carving himself and be the future starting center of this team, possibly if he continues to keep it up the rest of the season up for that. But, but the rest of the offensive line overall, this season has been really good overall has been really good and they’re gonna be extremely tested this coming Sunday. But what has been a big knock with Bryce Young we saw in the first two games. Gosh, you and I were sitting there, uh, in Bank of America at the press box in the L A Chargers game. The last time we actually started the game, what was the problem with Bryce? Not seeing open guys scrambling around when the pocket was clean and deciding to roll out or whatever it is and taking sacks, not the offensive line’s fault, his fault. And that is a major concern going in. All right, young man, that’s what I talk about. Let’s see if you improved. Let’s see if you got better from that game till now, show something. This would be a good game. And we don’t know, you know, um, if, uh, Jonathan Brooks will be activated or, or whatever the window for him, the 21 day window for him just opened up last Wednesday. So it’s only been, um, you know, as this is coming out eight days, right? But if Jonathan Brooks is available and you have Chuba Hubbard available, um, you know, you are gonna have to see a very run heavy, uh, game plan for the Carolina Panthers and like for real, lean on it and, and really figure it out. Uh, we saw a couple of plays where, you know, maybe they’re using, um, you know, uh Xavier lit to kind of stretch the edges a little bit, you know, you know, with motion in the backfield, we saw that, uh, last game early on. Hopefully there’s more plays like that, maybe some plays like that with, uh, Miles Sanders. But along with that Bryce with what, uh, you know, Dave Canal has said before, it’s gonna have to get the ball out of his hands really fast and not just in the checkdown, not just in the screen game. Like you’re gonna have guys that will have opportunities to be open down the field and you got to take them, especially against the defense like this and you gotta be sure about it and you got to be accurate because what’s what, what is the number one thing we heard about Bryce Young? Yeah, he’s 511 but great processor and he’s accurate. And you know, we saw the accuracy and some of the processing last year this year in the two games he played, we saw none of it. We need to see that in this game again. Doesn’t have to be the best game he’s played in the NFL. Has to be at least the second best though. Show us something, man, show us at least the second best, show us something, show us something. Now you mentioned our guys in the windows opening up 21 day windows opened up last week for Jonathan Brooks. We’re also seeing Adam Thin on Wednesday return to practice as well as Jor Jordan Fuller. Those guys on, on injured reserve. Their 21 day windows have opened up. We also have finally have seen DJ Wham show up to practice. Gosh, do you want to talk about one of the more disappointing signings this off season from Dan Morgan? It’s like, man, like, what were you sold to give this guy two years at $12.5 million? We’re almost at the halfway point of the season and he’s just now practicing. Like, I know he had that quad injury and stuff last year, but it’s like, I don’t know if your medical team or whomever got a really got a good evaluation or read on what the actual situation was because this is taking a lot longer than expected. And he was supposed to be the guy opposite of Jadeveon Clowney. Yeah, in terms of that’s rusher and, and the good thing is Jadeveon Clowney was a full participant on Wednesday and that’s good. So, um, and they’re gonna need as much, you know, uh, help as they can, you know, rushing the quarterback, um, on, on offense and I’m not even thinking about Denver’s offense right now. Uh, but of course, that is going to be a concern. Uh, just mainly because, uh, we’ve seen that the Carolina Panthers have had a very hard time, um, you know, stopping the running and keeping other teams off the field. Um, also this is good news, Josey Jewel was a limited participant in practice and, you know, maybe he has a chance to come back we’ll have to see on, um, on Sunday, but it’ll be great for the Carolina Panthers to have access to as many starters as possible. Um, you, me and you said it before we start recording, I’m not expecting want them to get back until after the Buy Week. Um, because, you know, it’s, it’s, it’s, it’s gonna take a while. They haven’t opened up his window. He’s just basically a limited participant. Uh, which means he probably stretched with the team or did some stuff on the side, I think, trying stuff on the side. Probably it. So, not, not even a lot. He hasn’t even gotten back into football shape right now. So I’m not really expecting uh much from him. But, um, you know, as far as this defense is concerned, uh, as, as many starters as possible that are available, we need them to play and I don’t like the fact that Claude and Cheli is, um, right now a limited participant. Um, here’s something though. Um, Chandler Wooten is back on the, uh, practice squad which lets me know that maybe they’re expecting Josey Jewel to play possibly because are you just going to, uh, I guess, lean on Shali and also, um, Trevor Wallace, Trevor Wallace without Chandler Wooten there. So, I, I don’t know. So it feels like that’s a possibility for, for Josey Jewel to play on Sunday, possibly. I mean, against his former team. Yeah, that’s true against his former team. Um, and there’s still John Ratigan out there. Um, who’s was a limited participant as well with his, his knee injury that he’s dealing with, but he’s mostly played special teams this season. It’s a mash unit on defense. It really is. And I really have no faith in, in these ever who’s actually, I don’t know, like, try something different. I’ve given up on that. I’ve given up on that. I’ve given up, you know, funny, you mentioned all this, uh, all these high stats when it comes to these high rankings, when it comes to the, to the Denver Broncos defense, number one in yards per attempt defensively, number one defensively in the NFL red zone touchdown percentage, number two defensively in sack percentage, uh, top six in the NFL in yards per carry allowed defensively all after I ever left, I just find that interesting. So you’re saying there’s hope for the Panthers once Robert Sola, who’s actually helping his boy Matt Lafleur with the Green Bay Packers right now, go figure he’s going to provide a defensive scout for the offense for the Panthers, uh, for, for the Packers. I should say, hey, you never know, hey, stay employed young man. Um But nonetheless, it is nice to see that some of these guys are gonna be working their way back. It’s nice to see that we might actually finally get to see Jonathan Brooks and Cuba Hubbard in the backfield together. And speaking of Cuba Hubbard, Chris, I was researching this earlier on Wednesday because there’s a lot of conversation of, all right, if you’re, are you gonna bring back Juba Hubbard or, or if you’re not gonna bring him back or if he’s gonna be too expensive, then maybe look to trade him. I, I understand both sides of that and I was trying to get an idea of player contracts, similar type production age and those kinds of things over the last couple of years in terms of what kind of contract could Tuba Hubbard command on the free on the open market if he rushes for, you know, let’s say 1200 yards this season, people might, teams might say, well, not a lot of tread on the tires because he hasn’t been a full time starter, but we’ve seen him as a full time starter produce and he’s a pretty good back and he might be a good 12 punch. I wonder what David Montgomery is doing right now with, uh, with Jamir Gibbs up there in Detroit. So I was trying to get an idea and I was looking at, is it David Montgomery’s contract? Is it what the contract extension that Joe Mixon got? Like those are, are single Terry with the Giants. I’m, I’m trying to get a gauge on what he could possibly command. And I’m also starting to wonder is are the Panthers gonna be able to afford them because they have so many needs and not a lot of cap space going into next year? Well, I mean, that’s where we kind of talked about it a little bit, uh, last week but that’s where you start looking at certain things. Uh, I, I don’t have the numbers of the contracts in front of me, but you’re paying Johnny Hecker. That’s maybe somebody that you look at. I don’t, I don’t know if it’s probably the second best passer on the team. So let’s make sure that we slow down here. But you, you know, you, you paid him for a reason, but you can also find the next big time punter um coming out of college next year and pay him $700,000. You know what I’m saying? Like there’s, there’s, you can, you can get a little bit cheaper there. Nothing against Johnny Hecker, but I’m just thinking about ways to save money. Then you also have Austin Corbett, right? Like we paid him from the Rams also like Johnny Hecker to come here. Uh That is a place where you could possibly save some money, especially if you think Brady Christensen uh can help you. Brady Christensen is gonna want some money uh as well to stick around. Um Maybe not a lot of money, but also that, that’s there. Uh Maybe you also talk to DJ Wham and say maybe we can get some money back and extend you a little bit next year because you’re on a twoyear deal. Maybe we extend you a year and push some other money down the road, uh, a little bit because we basically didn’t have you for the first year of this contract. Then you look at somebody like Ian Thomas, uh, bye Felicia. Look at somebody like maybe also Xavier Woods. You know what I’m saying? Like there are, there are places where, you know, miles Sanders if you can, uh, trade him away. Um, you know, he’ll have one year, I guess one year after this year left on the deal. Um and then um um Shaq Thompson, you know, I, I don’t want to say cut Shaq but then like, I don’t maybe like, let’s completely restructure this deal, you know, like, like let’s completely restructure this, especially if you want to stick around. Uh And if you don’t want to stick around, if you feel like you can get more money elsewhere, we, you know, we’re gonna put you in a ring of honor one day. Thank you for your service. You know what I’m saying? Like we, we wanna make sure you go out as comfortable as possible, but also we need to make sure that this cap situation is under control for next year. Yeah, I think it was Shaq Thompson. I think I know they, they actually did restructure his deal so he actually has nothing but void years after this year. So there’s gonna be dead cap hits uh for, for him in the coming years as well. But I know also in 2025. Actually, Austin Corbett, he has void year, so he’s gonna have a $7.7 million dead cap hit against the team and he’s probably not going to be around. Um, but there are different guys you can move like Taylor Moton is gonna count $31 million towards the salary cap next year. Cutting him will save you 12 million bucks. Could you find a right tackle possibly in the, in the draft or someone that you can sign? You know, that could be less expensive than that. So there’s a lot of different things, um, that you can possibly work around to in order to save money, uh, to Dave clow, he’s actually someone that you can, if you release them, you can save 8 million bucks now next year. Oh, I mean, that is a real thing like you could save $8 million next year just by cutting him. I mean, there’s even guys like you can save $4.5 million from letting a Shaun Robinson go. So there’s a lot of different decisions that are gonna be coming up for the Carolina Panthers this coming off season. But hey, Dan Morgan brand Tillis, that’s why you get paid. Well, I was gonna say, um, somebody like, uh, an as Shaun Robinson, uh maybe even a Dane Jackson, maybe even a Josie Jewel. Those guys came for a specific system if that system is not gonna be in use next year. You’re, you’re still kind of starting over on defense, but, um, you got nine picks and hopefully you have more space after, uh, letting some people walk. That’s a possibility. It is a possibility. But you know what, I know where someone can walk to. I want everyone to circle this on their calendars. November 10th when the Carolina Panthers are in Germany taking on the New York football giants. We Chris and I Panthers will not be in Germany. We will not be in Germany. I know that would be really cool. Wouldn’t it be? Uh, but we’re not gonna be in Germany. We’re actually gonna be at the Carolina Alehouse in Cary, North Carolina. We’re gonna be at the Carolina Alehouse there against a 930 kickoff. Um I don’t think we should call it what? Panthers and pancakes? I think we have a good name for it. A little and pancakes. Let’s do it. Come on out, hang out with us. Apparently there are a lot of giant fans are gonna be there. So, hey, you know what Misery Loves company. Come and join us. There’s a lot of people who live in Cary who are from New York. You know, that’s, that’s funny. But come and join us doing Panthers playbook live after the game at the Carolina House in Ky. But also I know people that want to say or have told us, hey, we want to meet you guys. We maybe watch a game or something like that together. It’s an awesome opportunity for you guys to do that. So we’re gonna be at the car Alehouse and carry on November 10th. So please come out, come hang out with us. We’ll have some fun. Maybe we’ll even have you guys come on the podcast. If you guys can ask us questions and, you know, we’ll, we’ll answer them, you know, as part of the pod and we might even do it live. We actually might even do it live on youtube as well. Uh, but nonetheless, make sure you subscribe that way. You don’t miss anything, Chris. Absolutely. And really quick before we go, I just want to say this. I’m glad that the Dalton family, they’re all ok. His wife, the three kids, the dog, um, you know, Andy Dalton said he was picking his kids up from school, they were heading home. Uh, and you know, that’s what happened. I’m glad it’s not anything worse than a sprained thumb. When I heard of this, I immediately went back. You remember when Cam Newton’s truck flipped on 277? It was like either 2017 or 2018. And I remember like laying on the ground smiling. Yeah, and he played on Sunday, which was ridiculous. Um But it also made me think about this as well. How much we took Cam Newton for granted that this dude can be in the truck that flips on 277 on a Tuesday or a Wednesday whatever day it was and still playing the game on Sunday. Like that guy, nobody can question, like people question him because of, you know, whatever plays in the Super Bowl. I I’ll never question him putting his body and life on the line for the Carolina Panthers. As many times as that guy got hit unnecessarily in the head that was never called by the NFL. And if you would have breathed on Tom Brady the wrong way, you would have gotten flagged. Cam Newton, you could damn near decapitate him and it’s a legal play. Uh So, um, anyway, going back to Andy Dalton, I’m glad he’s ok, glad the family’s ok. And Andy, please have price ready. Please. Please have surprise in. I’m so scared Panthers playbook sponsored by Carolina Ford dealers with the Ford F 150 on your team. It’s game on. So you’re, I don’t wanna get blown out again. See if you guys will play.
