In Sunday night’s game, the Carolina Hurricanes scored four goals in the final period with Dmitry Orlov contributing two goals and two assists, leading them to a 7-2 victory against the Ottawa Senators in Ontario, Canada.

Carolina’s goals were scored by Evgeny Kuznetsov, Seth Jarvis, Jalen Chatfield, Jake Guentzel, and Brendan Lemieux. Sebastian Aho contributed three assists, while Frederik Andersen stopped 30 shots.

According to Orlov, there were not many errors during the third period. The focus was on sending the puck deep and applying pressure on the opposing team. This is a strong aspect of our team. The key to success is to communicate and create openings for each other when in possession of the puck. If a shot opportunity presents itself, it should be taken and there should be someone in front of the net for a potential rebound. Today, our team greatly improved their presence in front of the net.

The Senators, led by Thomas Chabot and Tim Stutzle, had their three-game winning streak broken as Anton Forsberg blocked 31 shots.

“We need to regroup as a team and find a way to make a comeback in the third period and regain our previous level of play,” expressed Chabot. “We allowed them opportunities that led to them scoring, and in games like this, we need to take a step back, reflect and strive to improve individually and as a team for our next game.”

Some poor defensive coverage by the Senators allowed Chatfield to walk in and wrist a shot past Forsberg to make it 4-2 early in the third. Just over three minutes later the Hurricanes controlled the play as if they were on the power play and it ended with Orlov firing a puck from just inside the blue line.

Carolina secured the victory when Guentzel outmaneuvered Artem Zub and tallied his first goal with the Hurricanes since joining from Pittsburgh. Later, Lemieux deflected a shot from Brent Burns for his third goal of the season.

“We successfully seized the opportunity,” commented Coach Rod Brind’Amour of the Hurricanes. “Suddenly, we were presented with those opportunities and were able to convert them into goals, which can be demoralizing for the opposing team. From there, we were able to control the game and secure the victory.”

Carolina gained a 2-1 advantage in the beginning of the second period thanks to Kuznetsov’s goal on a power play. Ottawa evened the score at 4:51 with a remarkable play from Stutzle, who managed to shoot through heavy traffic for his 17th goal of the season. The Hurricanes once again took the lead when Aho made a precise pass to Jarvis, who swiftly scored with only 22 seconds left in the period, while Forsberg was stretched out on the ice.

Lemieux delivered a superb pass to set up Orlov for a clear shot, and he didn’t miss, scoring on Forsberg’s glove side to give the team its first points at minute 7:19. Chabot, back in action after sitting out the previous five games, netted a goal from the bottom of the faceoff circle at 13:52 to even the score.

Teuvo Teravainen of the Carolina Hurricanes was unable to play in two consecutive games because of an injury to his upper body. It is anticipated that he will make a comeback at some point this week.
