Northwood’s male basketball team has competed in the last five regional tournaments consecutively. After securing a victory on Tuesday evening, the Chargers now have the opportunity to extend their streak to six.

(4) Northwood secured a win over (21) Southeast Alamance with a score of 74-52, thanks to the impressive 21-point contribution from UNC recruit Drake Powell. This occurred during the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A boys basketball state playoffs on Tuesday.

Northwood dominated the match from the beginning. The Chargers limited Southeast Alamance to only seven points in the opening quarter, with five different Chargers contributing to the score. Powell scored five points in the first quarter, helping Northwood secure a 17-7 advantage.

The lead increased during the second quarter. Jake Leighton earned six points and Powell contributed five more, propelling Northwood to a 40-24 lead at halftime.

Stu Edwards and Bubba Sims accounted for all 17 points scored by Southeast Alamance in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Powell stepped in for the Chargers and contributed nine of Northwood’s 15 points, including a three-point shot in the beginning.

Northwood had a dominant third quarter, outscoring Southeast Alamance 15-11, and continued their momentum in the fourth quarter with a score of 19-17, ultimately securing a third-round victory.

Powell ended the game with a total of 21 points, surpassing all other players in scoring. Leighton was the sole Northwood player to reach double digits with 13 points, while Cam Fowler contributed nine points and Fred Whitaker Jr. and Beau Harvey each had eight points.

In total, nine different players from Northwood scored during the game.

Edwards and Sims were the top performers for Southeast Alamance, with each of them contributing 16 points in their defeat.

The Chargers have a record of 27 wins and 3 losses. Northwood will travel away from home for the first time in the playoffs as they take on Farmville Central, the top seed, in the fourth round on Friday evening.

In the third round, Farmville Central emerged victorious against Southwest Onslow with a final score of 98-68. The Jaguars, who are known as the current NCHSAA 2A state title holders, have only suffered a single defeat during this season.

Southeast Alamance completed their season with a final record of 18-12. As the 21st seed, the team, known as the Stallions, had a successful playoff run, achieving victories on the road against Roanoke Rapids and South Granville last week.
