Northwood continues Mid-Carolina dominance with tournament championship win
HAW RIVER, N.C. – Northwood’s boys basketball program has reached the part of its season where it has thrived the most over the past half-decade.
The Chargers defeated Southeast Alamance 60-37 with a game-ending 34-11 run to sweep away the Mid-Carolina Conference’s regular season and tournament championships.
Streaking shooting from the Stallions tied the score at 26-26 with 6:20 left in the third quarter. 17 of Cam Fowler and Chad Graves’ 29 combined free throw attempts followed and it quickly buried any hopes of an upset.
Fowler and Graves connected on 19-of-29 from the stripe and teamed up to score 48 of Northwood’s 60 points. Fowler led all scorers with 28.
In the opening quarter, Hayes Burleson and Fowler knocked down the Chargers’ only two three-point baskets. It was enough to build up a 10-8 lead through one.
All 15 of Northwood’s points in the second came from Fowler and Graves. Bubba Sims got hot from three and kept Southeast Alamance within striking distance at 25-20 through two.
Sims and Cardell West were responsible for the 6-1 run that tied things up at 26-26. Northwood used 13 from Fowler and Graves to go on a 15-7 run to take a 41-33 lead into the fourth.
Burleson and Fowler put the game out of reach with consecutive baskets while drawing a foul. Fowler rattled off six straight points, and Graves closed the scoring with a thunderous slam in the final minutes.
Northwood is 25-2 and projects as a Top-3 seed when the NCHSAA releases 2A East playoff brackets on Sunday.
