North Pitt and Washington settle for tie in matchup of standout ENC boys soccer teams

WASHINGTON, N.C. — There’s a certain flair to boys soccer in Eastern N.C. Teams move the ball quickly on the ground. They typically don’t have big back lines, so it’s harder to stop each other’s set pieces. Goals are scored with high frequency.

But on Wednesday night, a showdown between two of ENC’s best boys soccer teams ended with an uncharacteristic, low-scoring draw.

North Pitt, ranked seventh in the 252 area code, and Washington, ranked third, each scored once in the first half and shut the other out through halftime and both halves of overtime for a 1-1 finish in the Eastern Plains (2A) Conference.

There was overtime, which most conferences mandate, but no “golden goal” period or PKs that become mandatory in playoffs.

Still-unbeaten Washington (9-0-1, 0-0-1) scored in the 14th minute as Micah Whitley’s corner kick reached the back post, where defender Jacob Spivey tapped it in.

North Pitt (11-1-1, 2-1-1) answered in the 32nd as Alexis Martinez drew a foul in the box, setting up Abraham Martinez to convert the ensuing PK.

The visiting Panthers almost had the game-winner in the first half of overtime, but it was negated by an offside call.
