No. 9 Havelock earns a running clock against county rival West Craven

Havelock’s football team didn’t leave a doubt against Craven County rival West Craven on Thursday night.

The varsity game, which was played a day early due to the fear of inclement weather on Friday, resulted in a 54-7 victory for the Rams. Havelock was glad to play on Thursday as it was well-rested coming off of a bye week. Now, Havelock will have an extra day to rest and prepare for conference and county rival New Bern.

The Rams used three touchdown passes over the first seven and a half minutes of game clock by new quarterback Jaylen Hewitt to build a leader that West Craven wasn’t going to come back from. Hewitt arrived at Havelock after spending his first three years at West Carteret High School. Hewitt threw a couple of interceptions tonight, but they ultimately didn’t matter thanks to his four touchdown passes.

NC Central running back commit LeBron Sharpe rushed for four touchdowns in the first half to help the Rams reach a 47-0 lead at the break and trigger a running clock.

West Craven struggled to block Havelock’s defensive front, particularly junior Christopher Bispham, who was able to wreak havoc against the pass and the run.

Havelock finished its non-conference slate with three wins. The Rams surpassed 50 points on offense in each game and allowed no more than two scores from their opponents.

West Craven didn’t have the roster to match up with its 3A counterpart tonight, but the Eagles figure to be a key part of the Eastern Plains 2A Conference. West Craven defeated 2A power East Duplin in week two.

Havelock (3-0 overall, 0-0 Big Carolina 3A/4A Conference) will get to host New Bern next Friday. West Craven (2-2 overall, 0-0 Eastern Plains 2A) will host conference opponent Ayden-Grifton next week.
