No. 8 Wake Forest girls soccer fends off No. 14 Millbrook to wrap up regular season

RALEIGH, N.C. — Maybe there was a time, back in its “Wake Forest-Rolesville” days, when the Cougars girls soccer team took down Millbrook. If so, it would be rare.

In the unofficial “MaxPreps era” of about 2010-to-present day, it had not happened. Not even once. Not even while sharing a conference the majority of that time period.

That changed on Wednesday night, as No. 8 Wake Forest took home a 2-1 victory — possibly its first in its entire school history — over No. 14 Millbrook.

“They’re trying to make history for themselves,” said Wake Forest coach Rick Pittarelli.

The way the Cougars did it shows its growth over the last four years.

After a 7-11-2 season in 2022, the Cougars went 11-9-3 in 2023 and 12-7-3 last season.

This year, the Cougars (14-1-5, 6-0-4) are assured of the best season since the short season of 2021, in which it went 8-2-2.

Coastal Carolina recruit Caitlyn Britt got the scoring started in the 26th minute as she headed in a rebound that had hit the crossbar. The 1-0 lead remained through halftime, despite a lack of flow in the run of play by either side. But that changed in the second half as the Cougars settled in, using its depth to ensure there was no drop-off.

“Our bench is just as strong as our starters,” Britt said.

Peyton Berger’s laser strike from 25 yards out made it 2-0 in the 58th minute. Millbrook’s Lucy Ellis had a rebound goal of her own to cut the lead in half, but the Wildcats (10-3-2, 6-2-2) could get no closer.

The Northern Athletic Conference tournament is next week. The playoffs start the week after.

Despite Wake Forest going undefeated in NAC play, the conference champion is Heritage, which went 7-0-3 in league competition to win the league by a half-game.
