No. 4 Millbrook erupts in extra time to earn eleventh straight win

They’ve won big, escaped by a goal, come from behind, and now scored three times in overtime to earn a win.

No. 4 Millbrook has kept its streak as one of the state’s hottest teams alive. The Wildcats netted three goals in extra time to defeat Wake Forest 3-0, and earn their eleventh consecutive victory.

Katelyn Burnette drew a pair of yellow cards and a penalty kick in the first three minutes of the extra frame. Her PK in the 83rd minute broke the ice and gave Millbrook a lead that it would not relinquish.

The Wildcats breaking through in overtime was a culmination of a relentless attack in regulation. Despite few balls on frame in the opening 80, Millbrook continued to pour on pressure throughout the night.

Sydney Spainhour saw a pair of shots rise just over the bar, Abby Champlin forced a crucial turnover and rolled it just left of the cage, and Jordan Davis smoked a free kick that missed the frame by mere feet.

Wake Forest was able to make things interesting in the 60th when Abby Sealy struck a free kick of her own towards the box. The bounding ball snuck past everyone except Emily Onesti who would save the ball off the end line to preserve the scoreless tie.

Burnette’s strike early in overtime was quickly followed by an Ellie Wilson tally.

Champlin worked the ball across the midfield to Annaka Boyd who hit Gabrielle Sadosky down the sideline. Sadosky broke down the defense and located Wilson in the box for the 2-0 lead.

Millbrook took that advantage into the final 10 minutes, and put the finishing touches on the win when Davis launched a high-arching kick from about 35 yards out that glanced off of the fingertips of the keeper, and into the upper right corner of the cage to jump ahead 3-0.

The Wildcats are 4-0 in league play, and outscoring opponents 43-7 this season. They will put their 11-0-1 record on the line at home against Heritage on Wednesday evening. Millbrook battled back behind a goal from Burnette and two from Davis to defeat the Huskies 3-1 in March.

Wake Forest will play the second of three straight road games on Wednesday when it travels to Knightdale.
