No. 4 Holly Springs wins big at Apex to put finishing touches on SWAC title

APEX, N.C. – The final Southwest Wake Athletic Conference girls soccer championship is staying in the only place that it has known over the past four seasons.

Holly Springs left no doubt in a 5-0 road win at Apex to put the finishing touches on an 18-1 regular season.

The Golden Hawks have won nine straight, and their 13-1 record in league play secured their fourth conference title.

Sorin Smith connected with Reese Kulha in the 24th minute to break the ice. Smith then drew a foul in the half’s final moments, which led to an Ally Wahdan goal.

Early in the second half, Holly Springs scored three times in five minutes to break the game wide open.

In the 48th, Kulha ripped a shot for her second of the match to make it 3-0.

Reese Knouse drew a 53rd-minute foul in the box, and Adriana Bonnano took care of the ensuing penalty kick. Seconds later, the Golden Hawks won the ball back to Knouse, who maneuvered her way to the front of the net and finished to push the lead to 5-0.

Holly Springs has not allowed a goal since April 21. The Golden Hawks are projected as a top seed in Monday’s 4A playoffs.

Apex dropped to 10-5-3 (8-5-1). The Cougars are expected to qualified for the postseason and will hit the road on Monday in round one.
