No. 3 Marvin Ridge sweeps No. 21 Weddington to remain unbeaten in NC

WEDDINGTON, N.C. – No. 21 ranked Weddington volleyball splashed onto the scene with a handful of signature wins early in the year.

On their home floor, the Warriors had a chance to make a statement in Southern Carolina Conference play with a No. 3 Marvin Ridge paying a visit.

Instead, the Mavericks continued their unbeaten run against in-state opponents while making quick work of Weddington in straight sets, 3-0.

Marvin Ridge, now 19-3 overall, has not only gone 13-0 against teams from North Carolina, they have won all 36 sets along the way.

Weddington landed its lone punch of the match early on. The Warriors jumped out to an early three-point lead before Marvin Ridge answered back with its heavy hitters.

Ashley Murray and Victoria Simons saved their biggest swings of the set for last to earn a 25-18 win and seize a 1-0 lead in the match.

When the scoreboard turned over to the second set, the Mavericks leaned on the strong play of Natalie Unkrich to put the match out of reach. The junior dialed up a handful of kills while building up a wall on the right side to stifle the Warrior attack.

Her block for set point secured a lopsided 25-10 win for Marvin Ridge in the second.

Everything continued to go the way of the Mavericks in the third.

Their dominance was highlighted by a 10-0 run that fueled a 25-9 third-set win to put a bow on the match.

Two more conference road trips await Marvin Ridge next week. A home match against Mallard Creek is sandwiched in between stops at Porter Ridge and Cuthbertson.

Weddington, who started the year 10-1, has dropped 4 of its last 8 matches. The Warriors remain at home next Tuesday against Legion Collegiate Academy (SC) before hitting the road to face Porter Ridge on Thursday.

The rematch between these two teams shifts to Marvin on October 9 in the regular season finale.
