No. 2 Weddington uses big first half run to breeze past Cuthbertson

Weddington girls lacrosse has rolled through the first two weeks of its season.

The Warriors have a handful of signature conference wins already under its name, and a big first half run on Monday evening pushed their record in conference play to 3-0 thanks to a 20-5 home win over Cuthbertson.

Elektra Koulouris helped fuel a 10-0 run that took up nearly eleven minutes of the first half to secure the win.

Cuthbertson entered the contest as one of the only teams in the state to already boast three 30+ goal scorers in less than 10 games played. The Warrior defense limited them to only three over the final 38 minutes of the game.

The two sides exchanged early tallies. Koulouris opened the scoring for Weddington with its first two goals. Olivia Brooks and Eva Del Valle were able to pull even at 2-2 with 2:22 left in the opening period.

Del Valle’s equalizer was answered to the tune of ten straight, including three in the final minute of the first.

Gracie Webb ignited the run with a ground ball off of the enusing draw. Her pass to Abbey Testa was quickly sent to Allie McNulty for a goal just 13 seconds after the Cavalier score.

Webb pushed the lead to 4-2, Koulouris found Ella Turner to make it 5-2, and Abby Papatzanakis snuck a pass to Webb in with seven seconds left on the clock for a 6-2 lead through one.

Turner, Webb, and Koulouris quickly pushed the lead up to double figures.

Weddington took a 13-3 lead into the break, and outscored the Cavaliers 7-2 over the final two periods.

Now 6-0 overall, and 3-0 in league play, the Warriors are outscoring their opponents 109-23. They return to action on Wednesday at home against Jack Britt before continuing conference play on Thursday at Marvin Ridge.

Cutbertson is 8-2 overall and 1-2 in the league. The Cavaliers take on Parkwood on Thursday.
