No. 16 R-S Central remains perfect, shuts out Draughn for Tony Causby Classic championship

Often, Eastertime baseball tournaments are a war of attrition as teams lose pitching with each passing day of competition and the pitch count limitations lead to slugfests. Even an undefeated team is making quite the statement if it can pull off an Eastertime championship.

No. 16 R-S Central made such a statement on Wednesday, blanking and mercy-ruling a team that entered with just one loss.

Drew Yelton pitched a complete game shutout as the Hilltoppers defeated Draughn 12-0 in six innings in the Tony Causby Classic championship game hosted by Patton High.

The Wildcats (11-2) got just three hits on the night and committed four errors.

R-S Central (13-0) got two on with no outs in the top of the fifth, prompting a Draughn pitching change, but it did not stop the damage which came in the form of a Logan Scruggs RBI single, Jacob White’s two-RBI single, an outfield error, and Yelton’s two-RBI single.

The last run of the inning came on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, with the RBI going to Cullen Pruett, and just like that the 2-0 lead went to 9-0.

Before the Hilltoppers’ big fifth inning, the score was 2-0 thanks to a run apiece in the first and second innings. In the first, Jacob Ellenburg hit an RBI single and in the second Landon Whitley was hit by pitch with the bases loaded.

In the sixth, R-S Central tacked on three more to get into mercy-rule territory: a sac fly, an RBI double by Ellenburg, and a wild pitch that brought home Harrison Jackson.
