No. 12 Seventy-First unafraid of No. 20 Cape Fear as Nance scores 6 total TDs

VANDER, N.C. — The Seventy-First Falcons sent a message to the rest of the 3A East with a 43-3 win on the road at Cape Fear.

It was a battle of the top 3A teams, and possibly top overall teams, in the United 8 3A/4A Conference.

Seventy-First had been trending behind its overall scoring output of last year (222 to 41 margin against the same five opponents of the 214-70 total scoring margin entering tonight), but tonight’s game proved to be way more dominant for the Falcons than in the same matchup last year. In the 2023 game, Seventy-First snuck past Cape Fear by a score of 12-7.

The tone was set early.

On the opening passion, the Falcons went for it on 4th-and-short and senior dual-threat quarterback picked it up with his legs. Later on the drive, Nance broke off a 32-yard touchdown run on an option keeper.

A big sack by Xaiveon Gear forced Cape Fear to punt on 4th-and-18 on its first possession. Gear went on to pick off two Colts passes as the game went on as well.

Facing a 3rd-and-9 on the second possession, Nance fired out a wide receiver screen to sophomore weapon Shone Pone and Pone blazed his way for a 57-yard touchdown. Just eight minutes into the game, the Falcons surpassed their scoring output from this game a year ago.

Nance went on to account for all six of the Seventy-First touchdowns. He threw a nice 22-yard touch pass to Pone for a second throwing touchdown and broke off touchdown runs of 82, 12, and 1 yards.

Seventy-First (6-0 overall, 3-0 United 8 3A/4A) will travel to take on 4A Jack Britt next week. The Bucs are the other main challenger in the conference, aside from the Colts. Cape Fear (5-1 overall, 2-1 United 8 3A/4A) is going to try to rebound on the road at Douglas Byrd next week.
