No. 10 Lee County scores 13 unanswered runs to down No. 19 Cape Fear
The day before their conference game, Lee County, ranked No. 10, faced an 8-0 deficit on their home field.
After the second inning, the Yellow Jackets dominated the game and won 13-8 against No. 19 Cape Fear. The two teams, both considered strong contenders in the 3A classification’s eastern region, faced off in a competitive match.
To begin the first two innings of the game, the Colts successfully loaded all three bases without any outs.
Brody Jackson scored Mason Hughes on a sacrifice fly to right, and Evan Bunce rocked an RBI single into center for a 2-0 advantage.
In the top of the second inning, three runs were scored with no outs due to a bases-loaded walk, a passed ball, and a dropped ball in center. The six-run inning was capped off by a two-run double to left by Bunce.
Despite being ahead 8-0, Cape Fear watched as Lee County gradually chipped away at their lead.
Four walks, an error, a hit batter, and an RBI triple from BJ Brown helped the Yellow Jackets erupt for five runs in the second.
In a flash, the score was tied at 8-8 due to a two-out comeback that included a bases-loaded walk and two missed pop-ups in the infield.
Blake Carlyle slashed a two-run single the other way, and another free pass with the bases juiced stuck a six spot up on the board in the third.
The 11-8 held firm until the bottom of the fifth when Seth Beal doubled in a pair to help his own cause on the mound. Beal entered early in relief, and held the Colts’ bats silent in the middle innings to earn the win. Junior reliever Gavin Swann slammed the door with two scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh.
After securing a 2-0 record, Lee County will face Union Pines on Tuesday in their first Sandhills Conference game. As a result of their defeat, Cape Fear’s record became 3-1 and they will have a home game against Lumberton on the same day.
