No. 1 Grace Christian of Sanford fends off No. 10 Bishop McGuinness
The playoffs, similar to objects seen in the side mirror, may be closer than expected. Despite not having a conference, Grace Christian of Sanford and Bishop McGuinness, who are both ranked in the top 10 of the latest HighSchoolOT statewide rankings, faced off on Thursday in a highly anticipated game. This game served as preparation for their anticipated journey towards state titles.
The first-ranked Crusaders emerged victorious in the match after initially falling behind, ultimately securing a 60-43 win against the tenth-ranked Bishop McGuinness and maintaining their flawless record for the season.
Bishop was the first to strike, starting the game with a 9-0 advantage that was reduced to 17-11 by the end of the first quarter. However, Grace Christian’s halfcourt plays were more effective against the Villains’ 1-3-1 zone in the second quarter, allowing the Crusaders to take a 23-21 lead.
The Crusaders stepped up their defensive intensity in the third quarter, increasing their lead to 40-29.
The top-ranked recruit in the nation, senior Sarah Strong, led the Crusaders with 28 points. Junior Adelaide Jernigan, who scored 20 points and made five 3-pointers, was the leading scorer for Bishop.
