Carolina’s Andrei Svechnikov scored the game-winning goal in the third period on their only power play opportunity, leading the Hurricanes to a 4-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Jordan Martinook and Martin Necas both scored goals, and Sebastian Aho added another into an unguarded net, leading the Hurricanes to their eighth win in their past 10 games. Michael Bunting contributed two assists, while Antti Raanta made 11 saves.

Klim Kostin and J.T. Compher both scored goals for the Red Wings, but their three-game winning streak and seven-game stretch of earning points came to an end. Alex Lyon stopped 26 shots.

Svechnikov has scored the leading goal with 9:14 left in the game and now has a total of 11 goals this season, with nine of them coming in a span of 10 games.

After being sidelined for four weeks due to injury, Kostin returned for his second game and scored in the first period, putting Detroit ahead 1-0. Raanta attempted to block his shot, but the puck deflected off his glove and slowly crossed the goal line.

Martinook scored his sixth goal of the season during the first period, marking a career-high streak of four consecutive games with a goal.

In the first period, the Red Wings only managed to take three shots on goal. Necas, on the other hand, had four shots during the same time frame.

After being sidelined for over two weeks due to an injury sustained during practice, Necas scored his 10th goal of the season with 3:35 left in the second period.

No penalties were called until 1:03 remained in the second period when Carolina’s Jaccob Slavin was sent to the penalty box for holding. Only 20 seconds later, Compher scored his 10th goal of the season, tying the score.

Compher’s streak of six games without a point came to an end with this goal. It was also the first time since January 2nd that Detroit scored a power-play goal with a player other than Dylan Larkin.

Before the game, the Hurricanes stated that they had acquired goalie Spencer Martin from the Columbus Blue Jackets through waivers. This announcement was made as they currently have two goalies on injured reserve. However, Martin did not play in the game.
