NCHSAA girls golf championship history: individual and team champions by year

NCHSAA girls golf championship history: individual and team champions by year

The first N.C. High School Athletic Association girls golf championship was held in 1969, and the there have been a number of changes since then.

  • There were no NCHSAA championship held from 1980-1986 and none from 1990-1994.
  • There was no team champion crowned in 1979, 1995, 1996, or in the spring of 1997.
  • 1997 was a transitional year in which girls golf moved from spring to fall, meaning it was played twice during that calendar year.
  • There was only one team champion until 2003, when 4A was split from the rest.
  • In 2011, 3A and 1A/2A each got their own championship, making for three team champions every year.
  • During the pandemic-influenced 2020 season, the 2020 championship was actually held in the 2021 calendar year to coincide with the boys golf championship.

Salisbury and Pinecrest have the most total titles, each with six apiece.

There have been two four-time individual champions in Athens Drive’s Jennifer Chang and First Flight’s Katherine Schuster.

Athens Drive has had the most individual champs (seven) and is tied with Reagan with four different individual champs.

*This was the only time co-individual champs were crowned, due to a different format. Predetermined playoff format was to use handicap holes and play it off on the scorecard. Based on that format, Cary’s Melissa McCabe was first, Lauren Robinson of Pine Forest second, Northern Nash’s Ashley Leonard third (going to the fifth handicap hole to decide second and third) and Hickory’s Erin Massey fourth. However, quad-champions were declared.
