NCHSAA girls cross country team and individual championship history
The first N.C. High School Athletic Association girls cross country championship was held in 1980, and the there have been a few of changes since then.
- There was only one team champion until 1986, when it went to three classes: 4A, 3A, and 1A/2A.
- 1A and 2A were split apart in 1997, giving the NCHSAA four champions each year.
- During the pandemic-influenced 2020 season, the 2020 championship was actually held in the 2021 calendar year, in January.
- There have been three different host sites: McAlpine Park in Charlotte from 1980-2001, Tanglewood Park in Clemmons from 2002-2009, and then Kernersville (previously named Beeson Park, now the Ivey Redmon Complex) has hosted in from 2010-present.
There has never been a four-time individual champion, but there have been six three-time champs: Cardinal Gibbons’ Sarah Rapp, Carrboro’s Grace Morken, North Mecklenburg’s Kimberly Spano, Pinecrest’s Carmen Alder, and Polk County’s Karen Godlock and Jennifer Dimsdale. Twenty-five runners have won the state title twice.
T.C. Roberson has had the most individual champs (11) with Polk County (eight) and Carrboro and Cardinal Gibbons (seven each) next. Roberson has had eight different runners win the title and no other school has had more than four. Carrboro’s runners once won six straight individual championships, which is also a record.
