NCHSAA expected to admit 3 new schools at this week’s board meeting

Three new schools are expected to be added to the N.C. High School Athletic Association membership this week.

The NCHSAA Board of Directors’ winter meeting begins on Wednesday in Chapel Hill, and one of the first actions the board is expected to take is accepting membership applications for two new charter schools and a new high school in Wake County.

Discovery Charter School in Bahama, which is just north of Durham, and Sallie B. Howard School in Wilson are the new charter schools. Felton Grove High School is the new Wake County school.

All three schools are expected to join the NCHSAA for the 2025-2026 school year. The board will also consider conference membership for each of the three schools.

Discovery Charter reported an Average Daily Membership of 220 students, while Sallie B. Howard School reported an Average Daily Membership of 280 students. Both schools will join the 1A classification.

Felton Grove will join the NCHSAA as a 6A high school with an Average Daily Membership of 1,400 students.

The NCHSAA has 443 member schools this year. The new schools would grow that membership to 446 schools.

It is possible additional schools could be added in the spring. This past spring, three schools were added to the NCHSAA membership effective for the 2024-2025 school year — Ballantyne Ridge High School, Bonnie Cone Leadership Academy, and Central Carolina Academy.

The addition of Discovery Charter, Felton Grove, and Sallie B. Howard is part of the board’s consent agenda, which is slated to be considered on Wednesday morning.

The board meeting is scheduled to begin at 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday. HighSchoolOT will have full coverage of the meeting.
