NCHSAA announces coach, athletic director award winners

The N.C. High School Athletic Association Foundation announced the winners of the Toby Webb Outstanding Coach Award and the Dave Harris Athletic Director Award of Excellence on Friday.

East Rutherford’s Neil Van Dyke was named the winner of the Toby Webb Award, while Topsail’s Tod Morgan and Perquimans’ Justin Roberson were named the Dave Harris Award winners.

Van Dyke has spent more than 20 years coaching the boys and girls soccer programs at East Rutherford.

“He has had a profound and lasting impact on my development as both an athlete and a person. I have learned the importance of teamwork, discipline, and personal growth, which has allowed me to succeed on and off the field. Van Dyke is a true mentor. [He] has created an environment where athletes feel motivated, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential,” one former player told the NCHSAA Foundation.

In addition to coaching soccer at East Rutherford, Van Dyke has worked with the Rutherford County Soccer Association and the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association where he helped expand opportunities in soccer for middle and high school athletes.

Van Dyke’s input has also been used when it comes to rules at the local, regional, and statewide levels.

“Van Dyke has guided us to be role models for our younger teammates, and he has taught us to be role models to all others. He has taught each of us how to be a leader. The biggest leader of us all is Neil Vandyke,” another former player told the NCHSAA Foundation.

The Toby Webb Outstanding Coach Award is funded by a series of private donations. The award recognizes coaches who have impacted the lives of student-athletes by “encouraging them to succeed, helping to develop self-confidence, ambition, a sound work ethic, and other skills necessary for success in the students’ later lives; a demonstrated record of encouraging student-athletes to be well-rounded; and a reputation amongst their respective peers and the athletic community for fair play, good sportsmanship, and the development of these attributes in their respective student-athletes.”

Dave Harris Athletic Director Award of Excellence

Two longtime administrators were named winners of the Dave Harris Athletic Director Award of Excellence — Tod Morgan, who is currently the athletic director at Topsail High School, and Justin Roberson, who is the athletic director and baseball coach at Perquimans High School.

Morgan has worked at numerous high schools across North Carolina. He’s served as a coach, athletic director, assistant principal, and principal for more than 16 years.

Right now, Morgan is the athletic director at Topsail, but he has also worked at Chapel Hill High School, Jones Senior High School, C.B. Aycock High School, and East Carteret High School.

Morgan has served on the NCHSAA Board of Directors and on numerous other committees.

“A committed servant leader, Tod’s dedication to student-athletes and the community is reflected in his achievements. His leadership and impact extend beyond his coaching roles, as he has influenced countless students and peers through his transformational coaching philosophy and lifelong learning approach,” said N.C. Athletic Directors Association executive director Roy Turner.

Roberson has more than 10 years experience as an athletic administrator. He’s currently the athletic director and baseball coach at Perquimans, where he also serves as the Dean of Students.

A graduate of Perquimans himself, Roberson is currently purusing a Master’s of School Administration from East Carolina University.

Roberson is active in his community, but he also leads student-athletes at Perquimans to donate their time at local schools and nursing homes.

“I am incredibly grateful that my son had the opportunity to be coached by Justin. He taught my son not just about the game but about life – hard work, respect, and tradition. These are lessons that my son will carry forever. [He] is more than just a coach; he is an integral part of our school, our community, and high school sports,” a former parent at Perquimans told the NCHSAA Foundation.

Roberson is a member of the N.C. Baseball Coaches Association Board of Directors and has coached teams in previous N.C. State Games.
