NCHSAA announcement about Helene’s impact on fall sports expected Wednesday
If there are any changes to the fall sports schedule following Hurricane Helene, the N.C. High School Athletic Association plans to announce them on Wednesday morning.
On Monday, NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker notified the membership that the association and its board of directors have been working on the issue and an announcement would be made on Wednesday.
“During the past week, the NCHSAA Board of Directors and staff were busy collecting information relative to the impact of Hurricane Helene on the Fall Sports Season and the Playoffs,” Tucker said in an email. “Using this gathered information, decisions will be made by the Board members and announced on Wednesday morning.”
Tucker thanked the membership for their patience.
“Our thoughts and prayers continue for our membership in Western North Carolina. We appreciate the consideration and compassion being shown to them,” said Tucker.
Hurricane Helene devastated many areas in the mountains of western North Carolina. Some people remain without power and running water, roads remain impassable, and schools are closed through this week in some areas.
During past major storms, the NCHSAA has extended the football season by one week and condensed the playoffs in other fall sports to allow for more time for affected schools to make up games. The last time this was done was in 2018 when Hurricane Florence hit southeast North Carolina.
