NC high school football state records: Most state championships
Below is information about the team record for most total state championships in N.C. High School Athletic Association state history.
Team Record: Most State Championships | NCHSAA
Note: The NCHSAA did not play state championships for much of the 1960s and into the early 70s. Teams’ seasons ended with a regional championship. Those titles are not officially recognized by the NCHSAA and are not counted here.
1. Reidsville – 20 championships (1930-present)
Tabbed as the football capitol of North Carolina, Reidsville High School holds the state record for most total football state championships with 20. Reidsville won its first state title in 1930, beating Apex 20-7 in the Class B championship game. The following season, Reidsville beat Apex for a second time in the state championship game, 6-0. Then in 1932, the Rams won their third straight title, beating Elizabeth City 32-12.
Reidsville’s first runner-up finish came in 1934 when it lost to Edenton 6-0. But the Rams were back on top in 1937, beating Hamlet 19-6. Reidsville won back-to-back Class B titles in 1939 and 1940, beating Hamlet 18-0 and Elizabeth City 14-12.
Reidsville played Laurinburg in three consecutive 1A title games in 1943-1945, The two teams tied 6-6 in 1943, Laurinburg won 8-7 in 1944, and Reidsville claimed a 27-0 win in 1945.
In 1949, Reidsville began another three-year streak of state championship game appearances. Reidsville lost to Henderson 20-14 in the 1A championship game in 1949, beat Henderson 26-0 in the 2A championship game in 1950, and lost to Lumberton 18-13 in the 2A title game in 1951. In 1954, Reidsville won the 2A title over Graham, 20-6.
From 1961-1971, the NCHSAA did not play state championship games. Instead, the NCHSAA ended the season at the regional championships. Reidsville won two Region 2/West regional championships (and tied in a third) at the 3A level during that time period, but the NCHSAA does not count those as state championship wins. However, many people in the community in Reidsville do count those as state championships.
There was a drought of state championship appearances for Reidsville after that. The next state title for the Rams came at the 2AA level in 2002, the first year the NCHSAA subdivided the state playoffs. Reidsville beat Bandys 34-14 in the state championship game, giving the program its 10th title all-time. The same two teams played again in the 2003 state championship and the result was the same — a Reidsville win, this time 68-12.
In 2005, Reidsville and Shelby — two perennial powers — met in the 2AA state championship game. Shelby won 26-18. But the 2000s lit the fire in the Reidsville dynasty again.
Reidsville won three straight state titles at the 2AA level from 2007-2009. The Rams beat Shelby 28-20 in 2007, then defeated East Lincoln 24-7 in 2008, and then Newton-Conover 28-6 in 2009.
The Rams dropped down to the 2A classification years later and returned to the state championship in 2016 where it dominated Edenton Holmes 58-12, winning its 15th state title. After dropping the state title game in 2017 to Wallace-Rose Hill (35-28 in OT), Reidsville won three straight 2A state championships beginning in 2018. The Rams beat Northeastern 31-28 in 2018 and 14-0 in 2019, then in the COVID-19 pandemic-shortened spring season of 2021, Reidsville beat Mountain Heritage 35-6 in the championship game.
Reidsville lost to East Duplin, 24-21 in the 2022 2A state championship but came back to defeat Clinton for a state title one year later.
Reidsville’s record in football state championships is 19-7-1.
