Mountain Athletic 3A/4A Conference sets its post-Helene football schedule
The Mountain Athletic Conference will resume its 2024 football season.
After Hurricane Helene ravaged Western North Carolina, all school activities were put to a halt in Buncombe County. The BCS system has approved athletics to resume on a voluntary basis on Monday, Oct. 14.
The MAC 3A/4A is made up of schools from Buncombe County and McDowell High School in Marion, McDowell County.
Athletic directors from A.C. Reynolds, Asheville, Enka, Erwin, McDowell, North Buncombe, and T.C. Roberson High Schools met on Saturday morning to assemble a revised fall sports schedule.
The N.C. High School Athletic Association’s Board of Directors approved an extension of the football season to Nov. 8 from the originally scheduled end date of Nov. 1 to give those impacted by Helene time to finish their seasons. The Western Highlands 1A/2A Conference also made a modified schedule.
For now, the games are only scheduled to take place at T.C. Roberson High in Asheville or McDowell High. These two high schools are the only ones with access to running water. North Buncombe High also has water, but it is being used as a command center for Duke Energy, so it cannot be accessed.
Here is the new football schedule for the remainder of the season. Other fall sports are set to resume as well. If HighSchoolOT can obtain the schedules for those sports, we will share them as well.
