Mount Tabor 4-star WR Shamarius Peterkin chooses Virginia Tech over NC State
On Friday, Mount Tabor High School senior Shamarius Peterkin offered a rare surprise in the recruiting world. Peterkin announced that he is committed to play at Virginia Tech.
Going into the commitment date, Peterkin had a 100% 247Sprots Crystal Ball rating to pick NC State. The Wolfpack’s odds to land Peterkin on the On3 Recruiting Machine were over 90%.
Peterkin, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound wide receiver, is considered a 4-star prospect by 247Sports and Rivals. Only 247 has him ranked in its national prospect rankings. The outlet has him as the No. 209 senior prospect in the country. On3 and ESPN consider Peterkin a 3-star prospect.
His top three schools were UNC, NC State, and Virginia Tech.
The difference that Virginia Tech was able to make was offering Peterkin a preferred walk-on spot on its basketball team. Peterkin is also the star of the Mount Tabor basketball program.
As a football player, Peterkin made the 2023 HighSchoolOT All-State Football Team as a returner. He had one kickoff return touchdown and one punt return touchdown. He had 43 receptions for 824 yards and 12 touchdown as a junior.
Mount Tabor finished the 2023 season with an 8-5 overall record and made it to the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s 4A West playoffs.
