Mooresville’s No. 2 team ends West Stanly’s 39-game winning streak with a shutout victory.
As the one-month milestone of the season approaches, it’s possible that no softball team in the state can match the impressive record of Mooresville.
The Blue Devils, with a record of 6-0, have already won several significant games in the conference and defeated two teams that were state finalists last year. In a close non-conference game on Wednesday evening, Campbell Schaen successfully shut down the West Stanly batters, resulting in a 2-0 victory.
The triumph ended the 39-game undefeated streak of the three-time state champions.
Although Paul Kikta’s team had multiple runners on base early in the game, they struggled to score runs. Mooresville had a chance to score with two runners on and less than two outs in the first three innings, but they did not score until the fourth inning.
Cadence Lane hit a single through the middle to bring Avrelle Harrell home and give their team a 1-0 lead.
Schaen, who has committed to attend the College of Charleston, had eight strikeouts and only gave up one hit. In the sixth inning, Macy Crum hit a solo home run to give the team an extra run and expand their lead to 2-0.
In the seventh inning, the pitcher who throws with their left hand easily retired the top three hitters in the West Stanly lineup by forcing them to ground out.
Mooresville has a current scoring advantage of 53-7 against their opponents this season. The Blue Devils will continue to compete in the Greater Metro Conference, facing Kannapolis on Friday, then moving on to play West Rowan in Mt. Ulla for a non-conference game on Saturday.
Before Wednesday night, the only team to beat West Stanly was Southwestern Randolph in the first game of last season. The Colts have the opportunity to play the Cougars at home on Friday night before returning to conference play against Piedmont and Central Academy next week in the Rocky River 2A/3A league.
Aliyah Rush made the only hit for West Stanly with a single hit to the right field in the fourth inning. On the pitching mound, Lilly Hartsell struck out nine batters and allowed eight hits and three walks.
