MJ Morris, the previous quarterback for NC State, revealed on his social media accounts on Wednesday that he will be playing for Maryland. Morris, who participated in four games this year for the Wolfpack, joined the transfer portal in late November.

On Wednesday, Morris shared a photo of himself wearing a Maryland uniform and expressed gratitude to God.

During his first year, Morris participated in five games and achieved a total of seven touchdowns and 648 yards. In 2023, he began as the backup quarterback due to the addition of Virginia graduate transfer Brennan Armstrong to the team during the offseason. However, with a record of 3-2, the Wolfpack decided to make Morris the new signal caller. As the starter for four games, Morris threw for seven touchdowns and 719 passing yards, but also had five interceptions and completed 56% of his passes. During his time as a starter, NC State won three out of the four games.

Following their victory over Miami, Morris spoke with the NC State coaches and expressed his desire to sit out the rest of the season and keep his redshirt status.

“In early November, NC State head coach Dave Doeren stated that as the games continued and time passed, MJ approached him and expressed his desire to maintain his redshirt status. This came as a surprise to Doeren, considering MJ was the team’s starting player and typically starting players do not want to sit out.”

Doeren stated that after the fourth game, the player made it clear that it was significant to him and his family to maintain his redshirt status.

Armstrong reclaimed the starting quarterback role. The Wolfpack concluded the season with three consecutive victories and will face Kansas State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl on December 28.

Following his entry into the transfer portal, Morris expressed his desire to remain with NC State in comments to 247 Sports.

During a meeting after NC State’s win against UNC, Morris expressed that he still has a strong desire to remain at the university. He reaffirmed his commitment to the school and stated that he plans to spend the next four to five years of his life there.

Morris stated that he was informed of their desire to pursue alternate paths, such as acquiring a new quarterback for their starting position.

“After that conversation, I realized it was time to consider other possibilities and move on to a new opportunity.”

Morris stated that there was no animosity between himself and the program, and that he is departing on amicable terms.

Morris has a chance to vie for a starting spot as the Terrapins bid farewell to Taulia Tagovailoa, who holds the record for most career passing yards in the Big Ten.
